TV Review: Castle - "A Death in the Family"

The season finale of Castle, the quirky drama about a writer and a cop starring Nathan Fillion, set up hopes for a fun-filled return down the road. Signs are pointing toward a second season for the show.

After a cosmetic surgeon turns up dead, the race is on to figure out who killed him. The mystery of run of the mill, but this cast is the best reason to watch.

Fillion plays Richard Castle, a best selling novelist who comes to the attention of the police when crimes start to resemble the plots of his books ("Flowers for Your Grave"). Yikes! After all is said and done, he becomes a police consultant and proceeds to team up with homicide detective Det. Kate Bennett (Stana Katic) as a unique crime fighting team. The effect is not unlike Moonlighting, except Fillion plays a man who does not have as many hard edges.

The chemistry between these two is fun to watch. They are complete opposites in personality, but each would be hopelessly incomplete without the other. For example, Beckett is a hard nosed cop. Kanic pulls this off nicely which makes her character ready for anything and determined to arrest whoever did the dirty deed. Conversely, Fillion plays Castle as a man who enjoys having a good time. He truly cares about people, which shows in his interactions with his mom and his daughter.

Ever since day one, Beckett has revealed exactly who she is in bits and pieces. It turns out her mom was killed years ago without the person responsible being discovered and arrested. Castle is intrigued, and persuades one of her colleagues to let him see the file. By the time "A Death in the Family" ends, Castle discovers an important clue. Actually, another man has (Robert Picardo, Stargate Atlantis), but Castle has the grim task of reporting to Beckett the potentially devastating news. While the piece itself is meant for a new season, I can take a few guesses. Read these, however, with a grain of salt. I can't be sure any are the correct answer.

Kadi, "lowering" the ratings? When you watch online, that tells the powers who schedule television Castle is important to keep on the air.
