In a courtroom hallway, Gracie Jane (Jill Bennett) covers the Scott Little trial. He is the young man accused of murdering a judge. He admits he and the judge were lovers, which would explain why DNA evidence confirms it. However, every person is guaranteed due process, so Jeffrey Coho (Craig Bierko), Denise Bauer (Julie Bowen), and Claire Sims (Constance Zimmer) represent him.
Back at the law firm of Crane, Poole, and Schmidt, Paul Lewiston (Rene Auberjonois) goes to Denny Crane's (William Shatner) office and is surprised to see the senior founding partner in a bathrobe. Another glance shows something amiss - Denny has grown an extra pair of feet! Bethany (Meredith Eaton-Gilden) shows herself, but leaves mentioning her reputation is 'ruined.'
In Alan Shore's (James Spader) office, Jerry Espenson (Christian Clemenson) is distraught upon being sued. Jerry has his own firm. He fired an attorney whose work was solid, but it bothered him that the man was a Scientologist. Alan mentions freedom of religion, and Jerry replies he does not want to work with Scientologists. A bigger problem is opposing counsel, Sally Heep (Lake Bell), a former employee.
She takes Brad Chase (Mark Valley) by surprise when he sees her, but Alan is stunned. He and Sally once had a relationship, but Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) let Sally go after her work performance was not up to par ("From Whence We Came"). A million dollar settlement is on the table, but Alan is reluctant to accept. They agree to a court duel, but Alan places a side bet. Suffice it to say it involves syrup and the loser's tongue.
Once Sally leaves, Brad and Alan get into a discussion over who dated Sally first. I had trouble following the discussion, but I think Alan caught Sally on the rebound from Brad. Anyway, Brad finishes things by commenting Alan should 'stay away from my ex-girl'. Okay.... I know Brad is hurt that Denise is engaged, but doesn't he realize he just gave Alan a challenge?
The ensuing court battle is interesting. Sally and Alan are masters at their craft. In the end, though, the jury rules in Jerry's favor. Alan's closing argument about business reputations made the most sense. Afterwards, the attorneys settle their bet. Jerry shows up at Sally's hotel to see if she could be interested in him. Unfortunately, Alan is still in her room, and this sends Jerry off in a panic. I do have to say Sally has come a long way from the time Alan massaged her feet. Not only did she take Alan's bet, she brought the syrup herself!
