At the staff meeting, Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) introduces them as transfers from the New York bureau, after Marlene Stanger (Parker Posey) transferred there. When Shirley says Jeffrey Coho (Craig Bierko) is a partner, it's a shock to Denise Bauer (Julie Bowen) who desperately wants to be one.
Jeffrey promptly offers to be Denise's partner, which gets Brad Chase's (Mark Valley) attention. He doesn't say a word, but he is not impressed. Alan Shore (James Spader) suggests Jeffery might not want to be known for sexual harassment. Calling the kettle black, are we, Mr. Shore?
Melissa Hughes (Marisa Coughlan) enters and says a man needs their help after a judge is murdered. Brad and Jeffrey stand, but Jeffrey gets the case.
Jeffrey's client has a problem. He left DNA evidence at the scene. Jeffrey points out things look suspicious, Claire Simms (Constance Zimmer) the other new attorney, thinks the man is guilty and says so. Jeffrey tells his client he must and will go to the police.
In another part of the firm, Denny shows Alan a picture of a woman he met online. He is eager to have dinner with her. Melissa interrupts, telling Alan he has a client who was fired after taking maternity leave. The two attorneys realize Alan's client, Clarice, is a transvestite.
In the meantime, Brad tells Jeffrey he is "that guy", the one women flock to. Jeffrey points out even he wants to sleep with Brad. No, in response to Brad's question, he isn't gay, but Brad is really handsome.
Paul Lewiston (Rene Auberjonois) and Shirley discuss Jeffrey. She says he is a good match for the firm. Claire tells Shirley how unhappy she is. Shirley teams her with Alan. Denise comes up and asks when she will be made partner, and Shirley says when she is good enough. Denise is paired with Jeffrey.
Alan offers to talk with his client's employer. Claire meets the client, and they do not hit it off.
