TV Review: BET's Sunday Best - Goodbye Gomez

Part of: The Gospel View

On the latest episode of BET’s Sunday Best the gospel artist legend Pastor Shirley Ceasar blessed the viewers with her presence. Pastor Ceasar has a distinct voice seasoned with grace. The remaining four contestants, Emily Gomez, Crystal Aikin, Jermaine Sellers, and Shari Addison joined Pastor Ceasar on stage and together they sang "Heaven." Their performance was spectacular. Each contestant embedded this moment of bedazzlement in their heart, because the reality of the journey ending (for one of them) was on everyone's mind.

Jittering nerves and pounding hearts anticipated the departure of another contestant. Silence swept across the audience as host Kirk Franklin walked on the stage to announce the name of the person whose road to stardom will end. The contestants held hands and their collective breath as Franklin bid Emily Gomez farewell. Adieu, Emily… I’m certain that we’ve not seen the last of you.

Tonight was contestants’ choice, which means the remaining three got to select the song(s) they wished to sing. The finalists sang two songs each. Song selection is very important, it can make or break the performance. Let’s find out how well they did…

Crystal Aikin

  • Song #1 – "Higher Ground"
  • Song #2 – "Center of My Joy"

There was an anointing in her voice. Her vocals were strong and powerful, capable of bringing one to tears. Both performances were great. The first song started out shaky, but she pulled it together at the end. In the second song, the power of God took control, leaving the judges and the viewers speechless. She pranced around that stage like no other. Energy poured out of her. Her praise was contagious, it compelled the participation of the audience, leaving no doubt as to her life's calling.

Jermaine Sellers

  • Song #1 – "Hero"
  • Song #2 – "Praise is What I Do"

Over all he gave a good performance, the first song better than the second. In the first song, he maintained his eye contact with the audience. His approach started gently, then gradually grew to the pinnacle. In this performance he allowed his voice to shine without the vocal roller coaster, a great performance. However, the second performance did not go as smoothly. He was not able to overcome the fact that his voice was tired. One judge advised him that as a singer he must be able to get around a tired voice. He has a great range, and the ability to be able to sing in various pitches. Therefore, there is no excuse for him to sing out of pitch because of a tired voice. However, with his unique style, his voice is incomparable.
