TV Review: American Idol - Wonder Twin Powers Deactivate!

Part of: Armchair Guide to American Idol Season 5

Hollywood Week rolls on as last night's viewers were treated to the group performances, one more step towards selecting the final 12 for season five of American Idol. 99 people remained in the Orpheum Theatre and eventually they were divided into groups of three or four. They returned to their hotel at 2am, following an exhausting day of rehersals. Just as in previous years, some used the nervous energy to keep practicing while others needed to sleep and regroup mentally.

During the first ten minutes of the show I was wishing to God that someone would put a muzzle on Terrell Brittenum. He doesn't just have a comment for every single little thing that transpires, he has a lengthy lecture to give. Now give the man a reason to stress out, like the fact that two members of his group chose sleep over continuing to rehearse through the night and well, the result is hellish. I finally found a GOOD use for the closed captioning option on my remote!

Looking in on competitors during the breakfast before group performances is always a trip. Some are tense but confident while others don't feel ready at all. Tears, bad blood, and f-bombs abound. There are always a few that are clearly not getting along. Brenna Gethers was one of those. As she later put it while pointing to the big sign on the stage behind her, "It says American Idol not American Idols — there's no 'S' on the end." and really, no one could argue the validity of her point.

The first group up consisted of Paris Bennett, Stephanie Scott, and Hanna Freeman singing the old classic, "Emotion". When they finished no one was really thrilled and Simon Cowell summed it up with, "Wasn't great.". Two out of the three have proven themselves and both Paris and Stephanie advanced.

Terrell Brittenum, Anthony Hansen, Elliott Yamin, and Jose "Sway" Penala were up next with a Motownish version of "In Her Kiss". They held up pretty well and just as the judges were about to speak — you guessed it! Terrell asked to speak first and then proceeded to slam his group for not pulling together and practicing more. Am I nuts here or is this the last thing you should do in front of the people who are about to decide your fate? In spite of that huge misstep, all but Anthony moved on to the next phase. I was stunned that Simon Cowell didn't bounce Terrell at that point.

i was really surprised they let Derrel back into the competition. he and his brother can sing, yes, but does anyone honestly think either of them have what it takes to win? the attitude alone is enough to send them both home.

the twins bought a car - or a stolen car - using fake id, i think in atlanta, and have been booted out of the competition...i thought i read this about two weeks ago...i don't know why they're giving them so much face time...plus there seems to be too much filler and not enough footage of the performances...and tonight's promo seemed to really push the whole emotional angle to a new high....i don't think i like the way they're doing the show this year.

    Thank you Joanie!

Sal, I read that awhile ago and someone confirmed for me that it IS this set of twins that stole the car (or whatever the real story to that is). I have to wonder if they are just letting them have airtime because it makes them look even worse. I'll be glad to see them go.

The Terrible twins are just that. What kind of person steals another's money to buy themselfs a NEW car? Someone that has no regard for other people!! They think they are special, and above everyone else! Yeah, they are "special" all right. Wow, they even put down Carrie Underwood! Total losers.

They are totally stupid because no smart person would do the dumb things they do.. As I've heard other people say, they should be called, "Dumb and Dumber". But seriously, I could not imagine feeling good about them winning American Idol, knowing they steal from other people!

"Oh the drama of these two. They are worse than any woman I have ever met."

Think I'll get AI reviews from another source from now on.

    Agreed John.

Natalie- Didn't mean to offend & I apologize if I did! I AM a woman and get tired of us getting such a bad rap for nagging, ranting, etc. Men are quite capable of those things as well!

Your gender isn't the issue, Ms. Trinket. I appreciate what you're saying, but that isn't what your statement in the article communicated.

A good post Trinket. I typically don't care for reality TV. And not AI either so much. But, this season we did start watching it a couple nights. I can see why people get hooked on it. The only thing I hate is when an obviously poor singer gets set up to be made fun of. But when that nonsense is done, it's fun to hear all the good voices.

Isn't Paris the one with the famous aunt who's a singer too?

Paris is the one with the famous grandma who RANDY JACKSON was in awe to meet at the audition.

It's PRECISELY why she shouldn't win, and should get cut early.

Her grandma can get her a break. Idol is all about people who can't get a break, have no connections (Kelly Clarkson was a waitress in TX and would have had no break but for Idol).

Paris doesn't need Idol if RANDY JACKSON, one of the judges, is in awe by your grandma.

I hope no one votes for her because of this.
