TV Review: American Idol - Top Seven Results

Part of: American Idol Season Seven

Ryan Seacrest opened the results show with a reminder to vote for this year's American Idol Songwriter at the American Idol website. Then we moved into a quick recap of the top seven contestants' performances from the previous evening's show. After the recap, Ryan wasted no time in getting down to business.

Jason Castro was sent to the left-side of the stage, David Cook to the right. Ryan didn't let on which side meant what, or if either Jason or David C. was safe. Carly Smithson came out next, and told Simon he'd been a "little tough" on her so far this season, and Simon replied it was because he "thought she could be great." Ryan asked Carly to stand with Jason Castro. Kristy Lee Cook came out next, and she joined David Cook.

So, at this point in the show, we had two groups of two, with no idea who was safe and who wasn't. While this is the first time this has happened this season, it's a tactic that's been used in prior seasons (at least one I can remember). This way, Ryan can keep everyone guessing until the last possible moment. I felt bad for the four on stage!

The Ford music video played next. We saw the top seven attached to puppet-type wires, singing how much they wanted to break free. Luckily, they all managed to "break free" from their puppet strings so they could jump into the snazzy new Ford Fusions. Cute commercial!

Back on the Idol stage, season five's Elliot Yamin performed his song "Free." I hadn't heard this song before, but I loved it. At the end of his performance, he waved to the audience and seen clearly on his palm were the words "We miss you, Mom." For those that don't know, Elliot's mother died recently, and he stated this was his first time on stage without her in the audience. I'm not sure if he meant any stage, or specifically the Idol stage, but regardless - what an emotional moment for him.

Next, Ryan brought Syesha Mercado on stage and had her fall in with Jason and Carly. Moving on to Brooke White, she was told to stand with David C. and Kristy. So, the two groups were:

I'm not surprised that Kristy went home tonight although she's been improving each week and in my opinion was doing better than Carly who is beginning to get on my nerves. I really don't believe that she will last unless she gives up trying to sing with the "big" voice that she doesn't have. I also think that the "Davids" will be the last two standing and that David Cook has the edge at the moment.

Grandpa Idol -- I completely agree. I see a David A./David C. finale at this point. And yep -- David C. has the edge, and I think he should. He's more versatile than David A. (or at least what he's shown us so far), and he has that definite "star" quality I haven't really seen in David A.
