TV Review: American Idol - Top Nine - Page 3

Part of: American Idol Season Seven

Syesha Mercado - "I Will Always Love You"

With a Dolly and Whitney blend to the song, Syesha did a better than average job with it. Each week, I like Syesha a little more, and her performance was very nice. I'm hoping it will be enough to keep her safe, as I've grown to really like her. Plus, she hit the note at the end and it was quite beautiful. Randy: "I think you did pretty good." Paula: "Your voice has a velvety tone." Simon: "It was good, but not fantastic."

Michael Johns - "It's All Wrong But It's All Right"

I am so happy to share that Michael Johns had an absolutely incredible performance tonight. Two weeks in a row, he's brought everything he has to the stage — and it shows. I've been a fan of Michael's since the beginning, so I'm really hopeful that this continues and he sticks around for many more weeks. Randy: "You keep bringing it up a notch every week." Paula: "You're a rock star, a blues star, and you look gorgeous."

American Idol's Top Nine show was really a lot of fun. There were some really great performances and the competition is getting tighter and tighter each week. So — who do you think will be gone on Wednesday night? My guess: Ramiele Malubay. Of course, I haven't been right once yet!

Here's my personal ranking for the week:

  1. David Archuleta
  2. Michael Johns
  3. David Cook
  4. Carly Smithson
  5. Syesha Mercado
  6. Jason Castro
  7. Brooke White
  8. Kristy Lee Cook
  9. Ramiele Malubay

For the most part I agree with everything you said, with one exception. I'm afraid Brooke's 'just okay' performance could really hurt her this week.

Or maybe I'm just sour on the the fact that Kristy Lee Cook and Ramiele Malubay remain week after week while less deserving go home.

What was missing in Brooke's rendition of Jolene was the passion. It's a song of desperate pleading and she didn't have the emotion behind it. Like you said, it wasn't bad - not by a long shot, but it just seemed to miss the mark.

David A and David C were terrific, but Michael Johns blues version of "It's All Wrong but It's All Right" was the best for me. I'm so glad he finally hit his stride.

    Brooke White - "Jolene"
"I didn't like this very much. I'm not sure what it was, exactly,"

Simon and Connie nailed it. This was the only performance I saw because I love The White Stripes' version, and Brooke had absolutely no idea the emotion of the song. You don't grin like an idiot and wink at the audience while your pleading with another woman to stay away from your man and not ruin your life.
