TV Review: American Idol - Idol Gives Back

Part of: American Idol Season Seven

The second annual Idol Gives Back aired on Wednesday night, instead of the normal results show (which airs tonight). With a list of celebrities a mile long, there were moments of fun mixed in with all the seriousness. Here's a quick recap of the evening:

Our top eight performed three songs: "Don't Stop the Music," "So You Think You Can Dance," and "Rent." I actually liked all three group performances a lot. And did you notice how great the solos were in "Rent"?

Comedy was in high gear throughout the fundraising event, including Billy Crystal's cute, if long, bit with Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Kimmel's monologue about Simon Cowell's chest (and hair, and clothes), and Robin Williams who pretended to be the Russian Idol. We also saw Ben Stiller, George Lopez, Adam Sandler, Whoopi Goldberg, Dane Cook, Sarah Silverman, and Rob Schneider being funny.

Other entertainment including singing performances from Gloria Estefan, Snoop Dog, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Annie Lennox, Heart, and …Teri Hatcher. Yep, you read that correctly. Teri Hatcher from Desperate Housewives showed the world she had a pretty good voice. Backing her up was a band made up of celebrities we're used to seeing on a variety of TV shows, including Greg Grunberg from Heroes on drums, James Denton (also from Desperate Housewives) on guitar, and Jesse Spencer from House on violin. Other members of the band are Bonnie Somerville from Cashmere Mafia, Hugh Laurie from House, and Bob Guiney whose biggest claim to fame that I know of was appearing on The Bachelor.

Many other people were on hand to help Idol raise money. We saw British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (who, by the way, pledged to donate 200 million dollars!), Kylie Minogue, Maria Shriver, Sheila E, Brad Pitt, Daughtry, The Jonas Brothers, Koby Bryant, Kiefer Sutherland, Bono, Celine Dion, Mary Murphy, Eli and Peyton Manning, Reese Witherspoon, David and Victoria Beckham, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Alicia Keyes, and I'm probably missing one or two others — there were just so many!
