TV Review: American Idol Finale - Forget Taylor Hicks, It Was All About Prince - Comments Page 3

Last night's American Idol finale was all about the surprise apperance of Prince.

Taylor Hicks is just a memory in what was yet another bad American Idol closer. When Taylor and Katherine sang "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," I felt like I was listening to someone scratch nails on a chalkboard. I was totally disappointed, but more than that, I don't even care who won American Idol this season because last night was all about PRINCE!!…

Honestly, I thought it should have been Taylor and Elliott in the finals together. Both of them can sing and it comes from their hearts. Katharine, she has a beautiful voice, no one can deny that, but, I was glad she did not win. I actually thought Mandisa would go farther than Kat. Chris, yes everyone thought he would be in the finals, but he is not going to have anything to worry about, whether he strikes out on his own or joins a group, he will be successful. I am glad Taylor won it, he deserved it.

I enjoyed the show, and am glad that Taylor won. However I think that Chris and Mandisa were by far the better singers. The main guy who gave his review above is bitter, Prince was ok, but so outdated. For being such a bitter Prince fan he needs to learn how to spell the word singing. That makes everything he wrote sound ignorant.

Taylor I`m sure is a nice guy,but have you not seen how they had to add someone older whether
they be male or female talented or not.So as not to appear to be one sided choosing only young
auditioners they decided I guess on a less talented Taylor, what a shame so many good talent
was passed up just because they saw an older audiaunce has now tuned in.

We all wished Kat's the winner. Can't stand Taylor's dance which he had to inject into every song he sings. Does he look an Idol? And Chris certainly performs better.

Who is "we?" Clearly NOT the majority of those who cast votes for the man who is season five's American Idol. It's a fait accompli. I recall how I felt when Underwood won last year, so you have my sincere sympathy. But really, in the vast scheme of things, second place is great. Bo Bice is doing well - he says his dreams have come true and he's providing a comfortable life for his new spouse and son. Kat McPhee will be fine, and she knows it and she is grateful. (And frankly, her post-finale comments are the only things that have come from her mouth that I find believable, unlike the words that came from her mouth when she was singing.)

oldie one: if a black person wins, it racism. a white person, racism. a woman, sexism. a man, sexism. and older guy, agism. blah, blah, blah. stop it. they all sucked. none of them could sing. and none of them would mean shit to you if they weren't on some dumb tv show.

Taylor is authentic, or at worst *comes across* as authentic. What do we know about Kat, or Chris, or any of them? Kat in particular was so affected and plastic that even though she was one of my early favorites, I didn't know a thing about her as a person by the end of the show. And that, folks, is why people watch.. we think we get to know these contestants a little, and by the end it's like watching our friends compete. Lame? Sure. Fun? Heck yeah!

I've bought Tay's older CD 'Under the Radar' (the older old one isn't available) and he wrote a lot of the songs on it, AND they're good, AND he performs them well. I've preordered his single even though I don't like the song, because I'm voting with my pocketbook just to prove the naysayers wrong.

Can't wait until Taylor tours Hawaii.. I'll be there even if I have to fly to Oahu, which I probably will.

I wish the other contestants success (especially Elliott) but the last four months, for me, were all about Taylor, and I am thrilled he won! And rightfully so if you ask me (and the majority of Idol voters).

He's hot, he's talented, he unique, he's passionate about music, he's paid a lot of dues, he's not a barbie-doll 19 y/o teen idol.. hell yeah, I love him!

Congrats to the gray one... WELL DONE ! ! !
As for some of the others on the show - - Some were good, some better and some not so good but,
they all made it to the big sing off....
Looks - that is only skin deep/WHAT is under the skin is what counts. opps sorry bout that, forgot some folks cannot count..
To ALL who don't like the gray hair/heavysetones/
curves one has/forgets the song lines/sings off key/be they white/black/brown/yellow/ OR whatever
-- The answer is so simple~~~~`Every one sings BEHIND
"blackout screens" = NO ONE sees the singers PERIOD.... That way votes are made for the singing NOT for being white/black/with OR without curves ..... Judges still can make thier comments, aahhhh, ooohhhhhs or whatever !!
You will see the Last two standing on the night
someone is "crowned the A.I." and only then....

I`t looks to me by all your comments that A.I
has nothing left to offer in entertainment. Also what good are the three
judge critics if their opinions mean nothing
after the auditions, our votes are the only ones that count from then on.I say be rid of them or consider calling the show the American Idol soap
    Opera.

prince rules- even if you don't like him or think his older stuff is better.... it obviously is, but it doesn't mean he should stop entertaining because he still does it better than um- everyone. most people were excited as hell to see him as they should be. he makes singing, dancing, writting, playing look effortless. who else is on that level? if you think madonna or even micheal is- you are quite wrong so go do your homework.

Oh, you bet the man (Prince)still got it,what
a shame that anyone would try to knock him he`s
gone far. I realy dont believe those on the
show will get anywhere near his or the other
high profile entertainers statuse except for
maybe Kelly Clarkston. So just enjoy this short
lived tv program its now I believe on its way
    out.

Hmmmm? Since when could Prince sing? Wow! This is news to me.

I would rather fall in a hole and starve before I bought one of Prince's CDs. Although I would stand in line to buy Taylor's. Taylor is awesome!

Taylor Hicks paid his dues. No one ever said American Idol was for the young. American does not mean young. It is about time that the show put on some who could appeal to others than just pop/rock. Why is the thing about Taylor's hair and dancing so upsetting to so many? I never understood that about Elvis, The Beatles or so many other early misunderstood artists. Taylor was/is the best entertainer the show has ever seen. People who followed Taylor will buy his CDs and they will pay to see him perform live. All the bashing should stop. He won; Kat didn't; Chris didn't; Taylor did. The bashers should get a life and congratulate Taylor on a job well done. And remember, American Idol doesn't just mean young; it means American. I will see you all while I watch Taylor's single climb the chart! CONGRATS TAYLOR!

Taylor Hicks can sing, remember lyrics, and perform for the audience, that is why he won. He was the best performer and he strikes a chord with mainstream America. Taylor is the average guy who could have been happy singing in a bar with his band but because of Idol he now will be heard all over. It was great to see him win. He has the kind of voice that many of the great performers, Ray Charles, Michael Mcdonald, etc. have. Prince has nada on Taylor. I would buy any album Taylor puts out, I wouldn't spend $1.00 for any box set of Prince's recordings, just not appealing to me at all.

Taylor won due to people liking him,
not because of talent but because he was
different. There is no way he could become
anything great unless he took major singing
lessons and I dought even then ,he was 0k.
As for Katherine, she was a better singer
but still needs alittle more work. I believe the show is what it`s called american idol not
american talent. Its just a popularity contest,
not who can sing but who gets the sympathetic
    votes.

I have to agree. It is a popularity and charisma contest more so than talent, though that also counts greatly. However, I have to say that there are those such as Ray Charles, Joe Cocre, and others with non-melodic, rough voices that are now industry icons. I personally do not like any of them but agree with the concept that being different from everyone else gets attention. Taylor is VERY good and I'm sure would have been perfectly happy doing what he has always done with singing in bars with his own band BUT it is THAT experience that got him where he is and KAT had none of that. Practice does not neccessarily make perfect in this case but it sure got Taylor the win. I say GOOD FOR TAYLOR!!!!!!!He deserved the win over Kat. However I will also say that Chris was equally deserving and that is why the whole "only one big winner" thing sucks AND why they have the smaller contracts set up for the others who make top 12. Thank goodness for that, otherwise there would be a-lot of wasted talent out there who never get this chance. I'm so glad they do it this way.

As far as ripping on the show, I think those people contradict everything they say. If you think about it, they would have nothing to rip on if they did not watch the show. Ratings my friends, that is what it is all about. I agree that the show has put out more failures as the big winners than those who are up there BUT if you notice, for every one failed AI, there are at least 2 lesser top 12's that are out there now and doing well. Some may not know this if they only focus on one breed of music but those of us who listen to a variety know it. I also think some people dump on the show because they are just sick of the whole reality tv rage. Or maybe even they are jealous because it isn't them out there doing something so huge and fun. They are stuck in their same ole' same ole' life and resent those who have the freedom to try to expand their horizons. I commend every single person who dares to at least try out for the show. Even the truely untalented. They obviously have more spirit and guts than the rest of us and I used to sing in public for a living. Also, do not get me wrong, the comments about those who are stuck in their boring lives was NOT an insult. I am one of those people now. family, job, etc. BUT I also respect those who want more. The bottom line is this. DO NOT CRITICIZE THOSE WHO DO IF YOU DO NOT!!!! There is no excuse for that kind of hipocracy!!!!!!!

One more thing. As far as the whole performance of "I Had the Time of My Life" is concerned, it sounded better when tayler and Kat did it than from the original artists. I personally hate rough, scratchy voices, except that from Michael mcDonald. That performance was not GREAT but it was good! Kat's rendition of "Over the Rainbow" was atrocious and gut wrenchingly aweful and I hope she never sings it again! She is NO Judy Garland!!!!

Sansan Gotta agree about the dad thing. Way too much emotion. However, it may have been over the top but I think it is good to see fathers who are so obviously proud of their kids. Dad's get a-lot of flack in this world for their relationships (or lack there-of) with their kids so I think from that stand point all the emotion was a good thing. I still think it was over the top but not drastically so. On the other side of it, I think it interesting that not only did they give Kat a farewell performance at the end of the show but I have yet to see an episode of AI extra for her as was the case with ALL the others. There are a great many raised eyebrows over that one. I personally do not care whether or not she got all that but I am curious as to why not her when everyone else got it????? I do not like Kat, at all, but I have to say that is not fair at all.

Taylor is awesome. You can have a voice like Whitney Houston and if you just stand there and don't feel the music and let the music shine through you, no one will enjoy your performance. It's American Idol...you have to have a balance of good things...Taylor was the only one who had it. So Taylor won. Also, I wasn't a Jazz/Blues fan until Taylor...I'm a 22 year old that used to like everything but jazz/blues...the fact that Taylor could appeal to people my age (also the people who buy the most music), is amazing. I'd also like to remind everyone here, that's talking crap about Taylor, that the vote was based on what WE viewers wanted. The majority of us voted for Taylor, majority rules so get over it! (FYI: Also, Prince isn't all that great...none of my friends really like him...none of us will be buying his album...let's face it...he has a dead career that he's trying to revive by being on American Idol...sorry Prince, it didn't work. Let your career die with some dignity).

Yes Prince is amazing. He has been for YEARS! But, why do you people think he went on idol? to be SEEN. I guarantee you Elvis Costello would NEVER go on idol. It does have a certain Cheese factor, so as great as Prince is....come on....he performed on idol for one reason and one reason only....To Promote himself. Taylor is amazing and you should here his original material. The Tyler music Group has 3 of his ORIGINAL songs that are unbelievable. I have the CD. It's the true Taylor. He has to do what they tell him on idol. It's geared towards pop music. He will have the chance I hope to cut some original, soulful music like what The Tyler music group did with him and I guarantee you he will do well if he sticks with how Will Smith produced him and not Clive Davis "the mashine". Taylor is bigger than Prince at this moment in time. So we must know this and you must hear these 3 songs that are out there right now. They will be a collectors item some day! Peace out people.

I really doubt Taylor would ever go the "sex sells" road. So when you said Taylor's not going to be Prince, you got that right.

    Taylor's all about music.

  • 103 - YouGotOneThingRight

On that note, seeing Prince still going for the sex appeal with his songs is kind of laughable.

I agree that Taylor Hicks shold not have one season 5 of American Idol, but I watch the show and I saw a mini - Fantasia. Paris, to me seems like another version of Fantasia. Yes, she has the talking voice that when she speaks to you, you just want to choke her, but when she sings, she sounds like a R&B version of Shania Twain. Though I believe if Idol wanted another male to win American Idol, it should have been Elliot Yamin and if they wanted a female to win a third year in a row, it should have been Mandisa. Look at the past season, Simon has talked about Mandisa being the best female vocalist that they have ever had on the past 5 seasons, and he has said that Elliot was the best male vocalist that they have had the past 5 seasons, and I agree with Simon 100%. Sure, Simon can be asshole but he knows his talent. My opinion, if they wanted 2 female finalist: Mandisa and Paris, 2 males: Elliot and Chris, male and female: Mandisa and Elliot. I admit, Chris can sing, but he should not have been chosen for season 5 American Idol.
