TV Review: 24 Hours 23 and 24: Season Finale

This wrap up will be more analysis than storyboard - color rather than play-by-play. Yesterday I made some assumptions about how Day 5 would end for Jack, Audrey, Chloe, Logan and the rest. Now it's time to address those assumptions.

I was right and I was wrong.

All season we’ve seen some developments that we could have written ourselves. Chloe never failed us in her display of brains, bravery and cheekiness. (You knew that guy in the hotel bar was going to get nowhere with her.) Miles was pegged as a prick from the moment he walked into CTU up to when Karen Hayes bitch slapped him last week. Jack was Jack.

But there were also real surprises – moments that we’d utter, “whoa, didn’t see that coming.” From the opening hour when David Palmer was killed, to Edgar’s torturous death to Secretary Heller’s cliff diving driving, the show has kept us as bound to the television as surely as any poor sap handcuffed in a CTU interrogation room.

We had all of those moments last night.

But first, let’s look at some items worth mentioning:

The Wardrobe.

Martha changed her clothes one more time. This time she allowed for cleavage, and added a snappy chapeau and black gloves to round out the ensemble. The black outfit was meant to suggest respectful mourning, but the hat was a bit much.

Also, Jack took off his hoodie — I think this was the first time all season — and donned a flight suit. Sadly, the loss of the hood was disastrous for Jack, as we saw when he was shanghaied for, well… Shanghai.

The Rare Smiles.

Near the end, when Bill and Karen had a ‘closure’ conversation, Bill asked Karen if she wanted to go for breakfast. Wow, first of all, they actually mentioned food? That’s rarer than a smile from Chloe. Then, though Karen had to blow him off, she asked for a rain check. Dear God, Bill smiled SO broadly; I thought I was watching a different show. But why not? The man, (and us fans) deserve it, we’ve all been through a lot together!

Chloe – still kicking Ass.

Though she was mostly sedentary during this episode, she still managed to be fearless. Without CTU’s permission, she called up the Attorney General, so he’d hear what he needed to hear, when he needed to hear it.

Yeah, good point that we were surprised by some characters, and events this season.

And fey? tosser? I like the lingo.

That's it? Season's over already? Well, it's been fun!

Nice job covering the bases here and giving the color commentary. I for one think the producers and writers didn't know how to end it. There have been many lose threads never tied up on 24 and characters who have disappeared. The way they did this was lowest of the low.

Of course, Jack will be back and, when those Chinese invariably drop their guard a little, Jack is going on the attack. There is another possibility: they recruit Jack to work for them and he does so to gain freedom.

No matter what, it's going to be a long 7 months.

If I missed the season finale, does anyone know when it will be on tv again?
