TV Recap: NCIS - “Requiem"

“Requiem” first aired Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Seven episodes deep and following a most disappointing one, ”Chimera”, NCIS grandly hits its stride with “Requiem,” the most intensely personal and character revealing episode thus far. Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) faces full on the gravity of the deaths ten years prior of his wife Shannon and daughter Kelly.

”Requiem” is an episode that begins with the end a technique, jarring viewers who've been lulled into languor by the typical NCIS introductory procedural. The episode opens with Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) running through the open doors of a harbor hanger, shooting and killing two armed men on either side of the exit doorway before diving into the harbor to liberate Gibbs and a yet unidentified girl from a sinking car.

Gibbs motions for DiNozzo to break the windshield and extract the girl first, who DiNozzo hauls to the dock before returning for Gibbs. With the girl and Gibbs both free from the car, DiNozzo begins resuscitation on the two without apparent success. Gibbs and girl are dramatically laid out with arms splayed, their hands almost touching.

The episode then breaks to 24-hours earlier with Gibbs denying Abby's request for a photo for her mobile phone. Special Agent Tim McGee (Sean Murray) tells Gibbs a young woman is waiting for him in the cafeteria. Her name is Maddie Tyler (Cameron Goodman), a name Gibbs fails to recall.

McGee tells Gibbs that Tyler wants to see him for personal reasons. Gibbs meets this mystery woman, and after some prompting she helps Gibbs remember that"[She] used to come over to [his] house: [She] was Kelly's best friend." Maddie's father, a marine, is dead and she is apparently being stalked by a man she once dated, Marine Sgt. Rudi Haas (Nick Spano), and turns to Gibbs for help.

Gibbs inspects Tyler for injury and notices bruising on her upper arms.  As the two prepare to leave, Gibbs' boss, NCIS Director Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly), demandshe stay to take part in the East Africa threat assessments. Gibbs ignores the her and leaves with Tyler.

The team speculates on the Gibbs-Tyler relationship. Knowing her name, McGee searched Facebook and finds Maddie Tyler’s page where she identifies her best friend ever as Kelly Gibbs.  Gibbs and Tyler arrive at her house where the stalker emerges. Gibbs manhandles the intruder warning him to leave Maddie alone.
