TV Preview: House, M.D. - "Selfish"

Part of: Welcome to the End of the Thought Process: House M.D.

There be spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution if you are spoiler-phobic.

With the emotional impact of last week’s House, M.D. season premiere, the series returns to more familiar ground Monday night with “Selfish.” Guest starring Alyson Stoner (Phineas and Ferb) as a roller blading teenager who collapses at a charity competition, House (Hugh Laurie) and company are confronted with balancing their usual risk-laden approach to medicine with House trying very hard to make his new relationship with Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) work.

Their relationship is immediately out in the open (really, did you expect House to keep his mouth shut?), as neither House nor Cuddy want it to remain secret. Wilson, who still believes that House is hallucinating the entire thing must be proven wrong (in the most direct way possible). The team’s reaction to the House-Cuddy thing is interesting, with little agreement from the fellows as to whether it’s good or bad for them. The episode also features one of the best clinic stories in several seasons.

I’m not going to spoil the episode (you knew I was going to say that, didn’t you?), but I will say that the episode deals with the real-life issues confronting Cuddy as she needs to supervise the maverick doctor who is now her lover. But also the episode addresses how House’s practice is also affected. The problems are connected and the resolution is pure House. And just perfect.

And as long as we’re talking about the future, and if you haven’t yet heard, Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown) has been cast as Cuddy’s mother for an upcoming story arc. Perfect casting if ever there was—Murphy Brown is certainly a Cuddy prototype). So, House, season seven seems off to a very good start; I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Programming notes: Hugh Laurie is scheduled to appear on Tavis Smiley’s late night interview show on PBS late night tonight. It should be a great interview. Smiley is a thoughtful interviewer and a thought-provoking host. I would expect that Hugh will talk about House, but may also have something to say about his upcoming Blues album. Check your local PBS progam listings. In Chicago it airs at midnight on one PBS station and 1 a.m. on another.

“Selfish” airs Monday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.

    Barbara!!!!! Thank you! You had said Sunday, so publishing the preview earlier is a very pleasant surprise!

    I am going to cling to your words: "the resolution is pure House. And just perfect" - as an answer to my previously expressed concerns.

    I am looking forward to this intense episode, as i am looking forward to everything and anything this season - including the Candice Bergen as Cuddy's mother story arc, which i think has the potential to be amazing. Looking forward to having the two of them share the screen, especially since this season, Lisa Edelstein seems to have finally reached the well-deserved time to shine - Huddy fits her like a glove and the additional drama will just enhance the value of her performance.

    How twisted is it that this actually has me excited for MONDAY?? Leave it to House to make the worst day of the week exciting!

    I am giddy with excitement. Being the spoiler-nut I am, I found three little 30 second sneak peek clips online and they are screamingly funny - I am so psyched to see the whole thing. And your comments only make me more excited because you're awesome and I trust your opinion and all that jazz.

    @Janine: I totally know what you mean. Most people think I'm crazy when I say I look forward to Monday nights.

    So here's to Monday! :)

    @Zay
    I saw one of those clips (the one where Cuddy proves to Wilson that she is dating House) and yes they are really funny. I actually got one of my friends back into watching House by showing him that clip (he stopped watching half way through last year because he thought it stopped being funny, plus because of all the breaks).

    @Barbara
    (Mild spoiler if you haven't seen the commercials for this episode)
    in one of the promos that I have seen for this episode, House and Cuddy are in bed together, and I was wondering whose house they were at only because I find it odd that Cuddy would spent the night away from home two nights in a row and leave her child with a nanny or sitter again.

    I bet they were at Cuddy's house. I don't know why this should be the case, but at House's place, Cuddy was on the right and House on the left (as we see them). It was the reverse in the new scenes. Perhaps it's just where each is used to sleeping in his/her own place.

    @Ruthinor
    good observation, I also noticed at second watch that Cuddy is wearing some sort of nightgown, which I'm sure she wouldn't wear/bring to House's place.

    Some really great House-Cuddy. Not really spoilers, just a few stills from episodes 3 and 4 and a big spread in TV guide. Enjoy.

    My cut and paste will probably not work!

    Great episode! I'll talk about it more in the official post, but I wanted to warn all the west coasters that it ran 3 minutes past 9 so adjust your DVRs

    Having just watched "Selfish" I have to say that seeing the three "sneak peeks" on the Fox website sort of ruined my enjoyment of this episode. Some of the best scenes were in the spoilers. So, I will try to restrain myself from any and all pre-show peeks.

    As to the episode itself, I loved the love scenes, House is gorgeous when he's happy (and that wound on his shoulder very appealing). They are the most exciting couple on television and I'm looking forward to their continuing relationship - hopefully ending in a wedding? With them under a wedding canopy and House breaking the glass!

    But one fly in the ointment - he did give in to Cuddy too easily and too many times. It was too much of a change in his character. We'll see what happens in coming episodes.

    @Susan
    I learned that last year, which is why I only watch the commercials not the sneak peaks. I agree that House gave in a lot, but I don't think it was too big a change in his character, its jsut that his character has never had this problem before. He gave in to/took advantage of Stacey a bit too. My fave scene was the love scene where house kissed her forehead
