We're currently in the first week of November sweeps. Did you know? This is a hallowed and special time, when the ad rates are set for the networks. Nielsen ratings are even more important than usual - ergo, networks can be expected to pull out their big guns. Hit us with their best episodes. Wow us with their prowess. Hey, that rhymed. Nifty.
What's not nifty is what has actually been on television. And that would be... nothin'. A whole lotta nothin'.
Last night's Lost... you gotta be kidding me. That was what I've been waiting for? And this is from someone who likes the show (they had me at the brace position). The Apprentices... Survivor... lordy, wake me up when something happens.
Speaking of lordy... how about that Trading Spouses? Ah ha! At last, we have a show worthy of November. Not only was this the best Trading Spouses I've ever seen - and I've seen some goodies - but it was the best episode of any reality show this year. I know I don't need to tell you what I'm talking about. You've all seen the clips of Marguerite Perrin frothing at the mouth, rebuking dark-sided things, standing up as a God warrior, and frightening her children. She had pretty nice kids, actually. Not sure how that happened.
Alas, poor Marguerite. Thrown into a pit of godless pagans, and forced to... um... let me think... well, I guess they did put her in the same room as a psychic. His name sounded like Tristan Rimbaud, which suggested to me that more than just his aura might have threatened Marguerite. Apart from that... oh yeah, she attended a solstice party. There were bongos, and... um... a little dancing. Satanic!
Of course, big ole Marguerite is an easy mark. Truth be told, she's less God Warrior and more Oversized Drama Queen. And let's not forget that Trading Spouses is heavily edited, with one family always coming out as the villains. Still, portions of Louisiana are already rising up to defend their state and disassociate themselves from Marguerite's ambassadorship. Like The Amazing Race Weavers, she presents a distasteful picture of Christianity in a nation supposedly in its thrall. (Interestingly, both Marguerite and the Weavers mentioned how little they trust others. Hmmm. Coincidence? Symptom? Or disease?) As for all those decent, tolerant, loving Christians who feel persecuted by this misrepresentation - allow me to refer you to your Muslim brethren. Whaddaya know - being generalised about is no fun.

Eh....I like Trading Spouses, but why do they make all of the families from the South look so bad?????
I grew up in the South for 18 years and people like Ms. Perrin are the stereotypes I have to combat whenever I go up north.

All i could think while watching that episode was, isn't the Dark Side a Star Wars thing? Don't remember Darth Vader showing up in the bible...

Yes, I would love to see a Trading Spouses where both families were intelligent and controlled and sane and looking out for what's best for their kids, but with subtle differences in child-rearing philosophies, the nuances of which could be explored sensitively over the course of the hour.
Unless that would be boring. Then the screechy fat Jesus woman would do.

That woman was scary. It gave fundamentalist Xtians a really bad name, if you ask me. As you mention, the show is heavily edited. I felt so sorry for the woman's kids; when she came home, she made them all cry. It was horrifying. They took a woman who had lived a sheltered, insulated life, who probably had never been out of her home town for more than an hour, and threw her into the deep end of the ocean. A meltdown was inevitable. What if she had been sent to live with a family of a different race? *That* would have been interesting.
Her mind was closed from the start. She focused on the fact that the family was of a different religion and therefore, she was unable to learn anything from the experience. Would she have had such a fit if the family had been Jewish or Muslim?
...probably.

They don't. They had the one episode where the PETA-animal lover wouldn't eat meat but shoved the dogs nose into its puddle of pee (which as anyone should know doesn't do anything but scare the dog). She came off as completely hypocritical and insane.

Marguerite's hometown is where they busted that cult church for screwing children last spring plus the town is located less than an hour from New Orleans - home of voodoo, mardi gras, southern decandance, and some of the best hell-raising that I have ever enjoyed till Katrina washed it all away. Marguerite has plenty of demons to fight in her own backyard than to complain about hippies in Maine.

I was married to a nut case like that and lived with it for years........until I finally saw the light and got the hell out! I feel for her family...ESPECIALLY her children.

Amazing. The woman is obviously mentally ill. Bipolar, at the very least. Probably more. But because her insane ramblings involve "christian" themes, she's fair game. Let's all laugh at the mentally ill! If that's the new standard for "entertainment" I'm going to take a camcorder to a psych ward and do my own reality show.
I'm grew up in a state that has a lot of devoutly religious people in it. That would also describe my own family. And I have never met anybody even remotely like "Crazy Lady" who wasn't under psychiatric treatment, usually in an in-patient facility. Her husband needs to get the kids to safety and try to get his wife the help she needs.

This woman is a disgusting, nasty nut case.
And why hasn't the state step in and taken her children away???? What she did to those kids is called verbal and mental abuse.
Porky pig needs to be exorcised for the real demons are in her.

I really hope Margeurite apologizes for all the horrible things she said.
And like everyone else, I feel bad for her husband and her children.

What the ...?
No the correct conclusion is: because she's Christian she is exempt from being helped or rehabilitated, because noone in America has the balls to say the religious right are frequently out of their freaking gourds. Fundamentalists get complete freedom in America to lose their narrow minds and f**k up their kids. Try being that crazy without religion. See how many people rush to your defense. Why isn't killing your kids in Texas (because God told you to) a national scandal?

Why isn't killing your kids in Iraq (because God told George to) a national scandal?
It's all about priorities, I guess.

My favorite is calling everything evil...isn't gluttony and weighing 700 lbs. a sin? Hmm...

Your true Prophet, and Friend in the Lord, Tracy Marune recently visited the evil land of seduction and celebrity Lust, the Belly of The Beast, the city of "Angels", Los Angeles, California on a grave mission of importance and protest. Minister Marune went on this mission to protest The Television Host James Kimmel, of the "Late Night with James Kimmel" TV program. On November 10th 2005, Mr. Kimmel played a video clip on his program from a recent episode of "Trading Spouses" that featured a faithful woman from Louisiana named Marguerite Perrin. Mr. Kimmel displayed this video clip in a "humorous" context, in order to mock her and denounce the name of our Lord and Father Jesus Christ.
Tracy Marune made quick action and once again took the Good Lord's word to the streets in protest, and asked James Kimmel to apologize to Marguerite and Our Lord above in the name of Jesus Christ. In doing that, we might save the name of Christ from further Liberal Media bamboozling and attack. This mission may also have saved James Kimmel from a quick path to Hell and damnation.
