Another Dose of Awesome has cropped up today with the announcement that Warner Brothers are developing a new ThunderCats animated series for Cartoon Network. Collider have posted the official press release and two official images.
ThunderCats was a popular '80s TV show. It was before my time but good old Wikipedia provides a decent description of the show for the uninitiated like myself: "ThunderCats follows the adventures of the eponymous team of heroes, cat-like humanoid aliens from the planet of Thundera. The series pilot begins with the dying Thundera meeting its end, forcing the ThunderCats (a sort of Thunderean nobility) to flee their homeworld...The flagship contains the young Lord of the ThunderCats, Lion-O, as well as the ThunderCats Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, WilyKit and WilyKat, and Snarf."
For years there has been talk of a ThunderCats live action film or CGI-animated film but nothing has ever made it out of the planning stages. The announcement of the Warner Brothers cartoon is the first good news ThunderCats fans have had in a while. There's a very good chance that if the new animated series proves successful then there will be renewed interest in a ThunderCats film. It's certainly got an epic premise and Hollywood loves remaking old toys and TV shows so I can't see why it can't happen.
Anyway back to the announcement. Warner are teaming with Studio4°C, the Japanese anime studio who have worked on The Animatrix, Halo Legends, and Gotham Knights, to produce the first ever Warner Brothers anime. The collaboration has achieved "a realism and dynamic visual style" that will "thrill viewers" while the characters have been created "with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations". The show will feature a good dose of fantasy, a good dose of cool technology, and an epic story. If I was a ThunderCats fan I'd probably be a bit excited by this. Doing the show in anime will certainly give it a different look than the original show and it should have some pretty impressive action in it. Plus Studio°4C have a pretty good pedigree in anime and Warner in cartoons so this should be good or at least one to follow.
Finally, the concept image Collider have is pretty damn cool. I'm not exactly sure which character it is but they certainly look rather cat-like, in both appearance and characteristics.
