Another MTV Video Music Awards show has come and gone and while I think it is better than last year's host-free show, this year's show proves that it isn't the must-see event it once was.
-The pre-show wasn't that bad and one creative idea gave me a little hope. MTV put a genuinely creative (and literal) spin on award show arrivals with the "showbox." Some stars arrived in their cars and drove up a ramp and onto a large turntable. They would exit the vehicle and talk to an MTV News reporter while the turntable spun and showed off the celebrity's ride. There were some nice cars to be seen. However, a lot of stars drove up in the same type of car...a customized vintage convertible, whether it was a low-rider or not. Artists like The Game, Ludacris, Nelly, and Snoop Dogg all arrived in cars like these. Green Day arrived in the car from their videos for "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and "Holiday." My favorite arrival, though, belonged to My Chemical Romance. They showed up in the back of an armored truck.
-I knew the show wasn't going to be the best when the show opened up with Green Day doing "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams." This isn't a slam at Green Day. The performance was pretty good. It's just that it seemed like an unusual choice to start the show. Why didn't they start with a more upbeat song? Why couldn't Green Day have started with some of "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and then have gone into something like "American Idiot" or "Holiday"? The pyrotechnics seemed like some way to try to make the opening more energetic.
-I noticed that most of the celebrities in the audience didn't exactly look all that amused by Diddy's antics as host. They probably had issues with just how obsessed Diddy had with himself throughout the show. There was the ridiculously overdramatic entrance, the silly dance off with Omarion that included a "blink-and-you'll-miss-him" appearance by Miami's own Uncle Luke, the half-hearted tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. with Diddy "directing" an orchestra playing over some of Biggie's verses, and the "explanation" of why he changed his name to Diddy. I did like it when he pledged to give $100,000 each to the charities of the two winners of his Fashion Challenge. For once, he did something that wasn't completely about glorifying himself.

I totally agree with you, I thought the show was horrible. There has to be more talent available than what we saw last night. Maybe they should go back to Radio City, I think their venue is to big! I also think parading around in big fancy cars and boats is a slap in the face to the fans that are struggling right now.
I agree diddy was horrible, he was self absorbed.
I was happy for Kelly Clarkson, they got something right!

oh my god......r kelly has offically lost his mind.....on stage last night.....I LIKED THE VIDEO BUT TO DO A ONE MAN SHOW.....oh my god......it was plain lame!
i know hardcore rock fans laughed their asses off last night, its like rock music has been phased out for gun talk, dancing and bragging and bosting!
good luck mtv
maybe one day they will understand the m in mtv stand for music, not money

i dont know if anybody without tivo saw it but.........kelly fell on her ass.....i dont think that was a good performance......maybe if she was wearing a white tee... :)

I think Kelly did great!!! she keeps it real she wont lip sink (is that a word ?)I dont see any other "American Idol " Enjoying more sucess nor will anyone other Idol winner EVER have the sucess she has. I think she is great i watched a concert on AOL live was awsome she does a song from the Eurythmics (sp*) "Why" probably one of the best songs she has ever done live !

So what's music to you all? really? Rock music? I mean let's admit urban music is taking over. I agree with all the awards that Green Day received they worked hard for it and their album is great. But as far the show was terrible because Diddy was the host. I totally disagree. The show was a urban explosion because Hip Hop rules over Rock/Pop this days.

Mr. T, what does the color of her tee have to do with it? But hear, hear, the M should be for music. That's nothing new though: When I was attending these things (the 80s), they were still money-and-glitterati fixated -- what saved the old VMAs, however, was that the performances were terrific and they were fun.

I couldn't sit through the whole show, so my comments are based on what I saw bouncing back and forth to coverage of the hurricane.
The show has degenerated in recent years, as has MTV in general. I am an old coot who enjoyed the early days when I could say "I want my MTV" and mean it. Those were the days of annoying VJs when "Music Television" actually featured music videos.
I would have loved to see Alicia Keys perform, and others in the audience as well.
I must say Gwen Stefani is so damn glamorous and looks more like a movie star than most movie stars.

I think the show was a flop, RKelly lip singing come on what was that, first ashley simpson on SNL who got slammed for it now him. Are they that desperate. It seemed very political when it came to judges decisions. And since its the video and not the actual song or its beat I believe it should be the video producer getting the award not the artist cause it isn't based on the songs. And Diddy has his head so far up is you know what, to bad he's not as cool as he thinks the show could have been awsome giving its location of miami which I think had alot to do with the shows latin theme or so it seemed with all latin performers, performing there songs in spanish I mean can I get some subtitles atleast.

With "Didy" as the host, it was annoying to see so much attention on Black artists. When he would cut to others all they featured were black rappers. It was amazing to see that they actually awarded a white group like Green Day so many awards. It's ashame to see that all pop-culture has to gravitate around inner-city ghetto-ness..

It is sad to see that all you can do is complain that "urban acts" are getting some love. You all sound like undercover racists and that is what is the real problem. Have an open mind and appreciate all different types of talent. And because Diddy hosted the show gives him no power to who get camera time or awards.

Why did Fat Joe have to mouth off about G~unit and have to start stuff. Of course he knew that 50 cent was going to say something back at the end of his performance. 50 is right what he called Fat Joe. He is a big FAT Pussy. I bet that instead of hitting the party's, 50 and Dj. Whoo Kid went into the studio to finish the war. Thanks Fat Joe.... another money maker for G~Unit you tardo!

TERRIBLE!!
That was one of the worst VMA awards i ever watched. Diddy made a terrible host. He kept saying 'anything can happen'. I don't know if its just me but did anyone see anything.
I think most of the awards went to the right people like Missy, Ciara, Fall out boy and God knows Green Day deserved every award they got. Those guys ROCK.
However i do not think that Kanye or Kelly deserved any of their awards though they did give the best perfomances of the night.

I think Fat Joe is a bitch. He would get messed up by the G UNIT crew. Also I am tired of all the "Regaeton" or whatever this crap is. Gunit should first kick Fat Ass Joe in the mouth and then all his little friends he bought up on stage that suck!
14 - boywonder1
fat joe had it coming u no 50 aint gonna back down like that, it was mad funny wot him and yayo said, fat joe and terror squard are finished
15 - TL
fat joe IS a pussy...just like 50 yelled from his seat, when fat joe was walking off stage...
16 - Yowza
Whatever the hell R. Kelly was doing on stage was not only ridiculous, but went on for WAYYYY TOO LONG. Seriously, I was just sitting there with my mouth open in shock. Do people really like this $hit?
And people wonder why some say hip-hop is ruining the music industry...

I agree with most people that the show wasn't that great, but it wasn't so bad either. I was really pleased to see some REGGEATON performers like Daddy Yankee,Don Omar, etc...And I really love Shakira and Alejandro Sanz's big performance, they were great; they always give a amazing show by the way.
I didn't like that Diddy hosted the show and most of the performers in the awards suck really bad like those stupid punk "artist not". I tought that Missy Eliot trully deserved her award. Hopefully, next year's awards will be a lot better and with better performences.

to proudlatina
I don't mean to be offensive and stuff since you are latino (i'm guessing from your name) but i think that the latino guys did more to spoil the show than to make it more interesting. Other than Yankee, i've NEVER heard of any of the others who performed and honestly wouldn't like to.
Missy did deserve her award, didn't she.
19 - Tan The Man
At least Coldplay performed.
20 - eriqo
Yea, that was a real highlight in the VMAs
21 - Jose
P. Diddy, sucked as usual. Fat Joe came off with some class, 50 and Yayo had nothing to say but f*** this and fat that. Fat Joe is an Industry veteran with more respect and love than 50 will ever get. 50 has no talent, he had one good album and that was it. He thought cause he made a few hits he could start calling people out, but he ain't got that kind of clout. He don't watch his step he's gonna be blackballed from the industry. He fell off the map once, he's lucky he was able to make a comeback, it could happen again.

um 2 words about Eva Longoria.......camel toe
23 - eriqo
I have a feeling camel toe isn't a good thing to say about someone.
Antway, i thought she was the Hottest chic at the VMAs...after Ciara, off course.
24 - Tube
Well, if she wears something like she did ( I agree she was hot), she'll get some comments like that and that is an understatement.
25 - BA
I thought the VMA's was alright. Fat joe's a good rapper andI aint mind his comment bout 50 to much. It was a friendly "insult." And i got love for 50 but he's starting to get really annoying. it was annoying when he was like F#$ck! Fat Joe and callin' him pussy. Dont 50 got anything else beter to do? He thinks he's so tough.
