This is one movie that I am really looking forward to. I don't know when I became a Joss Whedon fan, but I picked up Buffy really late, I think it was season 5 or 6, and Angel with season 3. Firefly, on the other hand, I was with right from the doomed start. It is a shame that show got screwed with as much as it did, it was truly an excellent show.
Firefly is gaining new life as a feature film called Serenity, if you didn't already know. It was originally set to open in April, but unwilling to risk getting swallowed by Star Wars or War of the Worlds, its release was moved to the end of September, 30th to be be exact. I think that was a good decision, it has a better chance of reaching the audience it deserves. In the meantime, writer/director Joss Whedon has been giving special viewings of the film around the country, which is generating some great word of mouth.
This is the second trailer to come out for the film, and it looks great! It looks to have a great mixture of action and comedy, as well as fun performances from the leads. Something that always comes across is the fun that the cast has in making the film. It looks to have all the principal cast members from the short-lived show on board for this journey.
The one thing I have been unable to ascertain is how this fits into the timeline of the series, or if any of it has been rewritten to fit as a standalone film. Either way it looks to be an excellent film. This trailer seems to capture the spirit of what this film will be, and I cannot wait.
You can see the trailer here.

The film is set about 6 months after the series ended. Dark Horse Comics is doing a series of three comics that are a bridge between the television show and the movie. But, the movie is a stand alone film that you don't need to see the television show to know what's going on. Joss Whedon specifically wrote it this way so that the fans of show and newcomers both could enjoy the movie.
Of course, if you are a fan, you will already love all the characters and feel like you know them better but it isn't necessary to have watched the series to enjoy the film.
