The Trailer Park: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Part of: Trailer Park

The second theatrical trailer is out, and it is better than the first. I am very much looking forward to this. As apprehensive as I was about second version of this tale, but they picked the perfect guy for the material.

Tim Burton seems born to tackle bizarre material such as this. Judging by the trailers and commercials that have come so far, it appears he may have hit this one out of the proverbial park.

It looks to be visually stunning, with some obvious nods to the previosu film, but also striking out in its own direction. I liked how this trailer played up the mystery of the factory, and introduces us to the kids.

This just looks magical. Burton is one of my favorite working directors, he may not always nail the project, but even his less than perfect outings have interesting aspects to them, for example Mars Attacks.

Anyway, you can check out the new trailer HERE.

My fussiness knows no bounds when it comes to Hollywood remakes; classics send me over the edge. Does anyone have an original thought anymore?

However, when Tim Burton and Johnny Depp come together, they can do no wrong. *sniff* My two favorite weirdoes.

Well, it's been said, I forget by whom, that all the stories have been told, all that is left is the style in which they are told.

This really isn't so mucha remake, as it is an interpretation of the book. Doahl(sp?) was said to have hated the Wilder version. His estate kept tight control over who would get the property and Burton was essentially hand-picked to translate the book to film. How much of that is true and how much is rumor, I am not sure.

Anyway, remakes, reimagining, and reinterpretation have existed as long as the medium has. I have nothing against a remake, although many turn out horribly, others turn out great, Carpenter's version of The Thing, for example, or House of Wax (Vincent Price version), and to a lesser extent Dawn of the Dead. But for every decent one, you get a Psycho, or Amutyville Horror (I didn't like the original though).

Different indiviuduals can have very different takes on the same material, and that can be interesting. I think the best example of that would be Paul Schrader and Renny Harlin's recent differences on the Exorcist prequel, but I haven't seen Schrader's yet, but it can't be worse than Harlin's.

Depp and Burton are gold together! Can't wait for this or the Corpse Bride.

Just from looking at the trailer, I can tell that it is much more faithful to Dahl's book. It'll be interesting to see whether they incorporate things from the second book, which is kind of Sci-Fi retro. Charlie and his family go to the 'Space Hotel' and are nearly eaten by Vermicious K'nids. I didn't really like the original all that well, after reading the book, so I'm looking forward to this.

I wonder if there's a comparison to be made in the relationship between Brooks and Wilder and that between Depp and Burton.

While I am sure Tim Burton is wacky enough to carry off the Wonka World, and though I usually like Johnny Depp, I don't hink I'll like his characterization of Wonka as much as I do Gene Wilder's.

Interesting idea Leo, I never thought about that, but I think you could draw some comparisons between the two pairings.

I like what I see of Depp's take in the trailers so far, it is good to see he isn't aping Wilder's performance. I really should read the book, and for the record I loved the Wilder version.

Echo Chris, i.e., glad to see that Depp isn't settling for rehashing Wilder's performance.

Count me old-fashioned. Chances are that I will probably see it this summer, but I've already lowered my expectations. I grew up watching the original, and 99% of the time, I usually prefer the original movies to the remakes. Although this remake is more faithful to the book, I probably will still prefer the original movie to this one.

    I can't wait!

I doubt that they're keeping the "Oom-pah" song in the Burton version; anyone know fer sure?

Leaving that out would be a major mistake, imho.

This and Miyazaki’s "Howl's Moving Castle" are on my summer list!

Just remember, technically this isn't a remake, that would mean they are making another version of the same film. This is a translation of the book. ALthough there seem to be elemens of the early film creeping in.

I know the Oompa Loompa's do some sort of singing, not sure how close it is to the other format though.

I'm looking forward to Howl's Moving Castle as well!
