The Simple Life turns sour - Page 2

Paris, surprisingly, offers up her charge card, and after the owner leaves Nicole utters the comment that really changed my opinion about this show - "What's the big deal? It's like $120. Get over it." And that's when all the fun drained out of it. It's not so amusing thinking about these "poor rich girls" suffering out there, dealing with all the lowly "everyday" things us normal humans don't even blink an eye about, not when you realize that not only are they oblivious about their good fortunes, they're oblivious that others aren't so fortunate that they can buy a $1500 pet carrier for the trip, as Paris did on the first show in preparation for the flight to their new family.

No, these two have no comprehension that people actually work for money. Their giddy disregard for jobs, bosses, and coworkers was amusing when I just thought these two were being that way because they knew they'd never have to worry about working. Now it's offensive - not only do they not have a worry in the world about ever working, they don't even make the connection that for 99% of the public, work equals money. For people like Hilton and Ritchie, money is just out there and if you run out, you just get more. Nicole can blow off the $120 birdhouse charge because it doesn't mean to her that someone has to do many hours of work to make up for that loss.

It's disgusting and disturbing - not only are they out there, but there are more like them. And look at the ego boost we're given them with a show like this. It doesn't faze them at all that we're laughing not with but at them. They laugh right back - they know that after shooting is over, they go right back to their normal, spoiled, meaningless lives. And we continue doing the boring crap no one would ever want to film. Who's left laughing then?

(Laugh with unproductivity.)

Mark, I've been tainted by Average Joe. Face it, man, I'm on the dark side now. I will not, however, EVER watch the Bachelor any of it's sibling shows, The Real World/Road Rules, or anything like that. I'm only into it for the real trash. ;-)

I saw the first episode but missed the other two. It is ashame how these girls think. I hope that on one of the episodes things come full circle and the girls sit down and are explained what the budget and financial situation of the family they are living with. I also hope that something miraculously makes them realize where they are and what they are doing. Unfortunately I already know I am dreaming and have accepted the fact that these girls will most likely just see this a good shot at publicity and return to their normal lives without any consideration or concern for others. Pretty much business as usual. It would be refreshing if they got some sort of wakeup call though...

I'm not sure where the show goes now that everyone knows they are as bad as they appeared to be, or worse.

I think the producers hoped they would reveal some humanity, some empathy beneath the shallow exteriors, but there appears to be nothing there. It's sad and pathetic.

You know... it would be really funny if someone just cut them off. Their credit cards, everything... so they would have a crash course in working and following a budget.

    Of course, that'll never happen.
