The Simple Life turns sour

The "fun" of Fox's The Simple Life, where we get to watch two spoiled rich girls attempt to deal with life on the farm, is beginning to wear off. It's one thing to take joy in watching them blow off every job they've been given, but it's another entirely to see their truly uncaring nature come out. Let's overlook the fact that most of us wouldn't choose to do the jobs that Paris and Nicole have been assigned - more often than not, the girls are employed doing something that is exclusive to rural America, not the majority of us who slave away in offices. That wouldn't make for good TV, now would it?

On this week's episode, the girls were tasked with working at a cattle auction. No one's surprised when the two would rather flirt with the local boys working there, and the boys reactions are refreshingly amusing - they don't seem all that charmed by these two girls. When the owner sends the girls out for "cow food" we're given a glimpse of just how rude, crude, and low these two can be, and how out of touch with reality they are.

On the owner's credit, the two girls bounce and cavort about the feed shop, carelessly picking up items because, as Nicole Ritchie puts it, she just can't resist using credit. At the end, they've charged up a full-length folding mirror (why is this available in a feed store?) and an expensive birdhouse, which they later give to the mother of the family they are staying with for Mother's Day.

We all know what's coming - the mother thinks the gift is really thoughtful and is surprised to receive something so extravagant, and the next day the owner phones her about the mysterious charges on his account. When confronted by the owner, the girls hide and giggle, and Nicole eventually emerges, having splashed water on her face, "crying" about the death of her cat. The owner isn't buying it, and when Nicole disappears to consult Paris, she does so under the guise of talking to her "sick grandma" - apparently forgetting the fact that everyone in town knows they don't live there.

Mark, I've been tainted by Average Joe. Face it, man, I'm on the dark side now. I will not, however, EVER watch the Bachelor any of it's sibling shows, The Real World/Road Rules, or anything like that. I'm only into it for the real trash. ;-)

I saw the first episode but missed the other two. It is ashame how these girls think. I hope that on one of the episodes things come full circle and the girls sit down and are explained what the budget and financial situation of the family they are living with. I also hope that something miraculously makes them realize where they are and what they are doing. Unfortunately I already know I am dreaming and have accepted the fact that these girls will most likely just see this a good shot at publicity and return to their normal lives without any consideration or concern for others. Pretty much business as usual. It would be refreshing if they got some sort of wakeup call though...

I'm not sure where the show goes now that everyone knows they are as bad as they appeared to be, or worse.

I think the producers hoped they would reveal some humanity, some empathy beneath the shallow exteriors, but there appears to be nothing there. It's sad and pathetic.

You know... it would be really funny if someone just cut them off. Their credit cards, everything... so they would have a crash course in working and following a budget.

    Of course, that'll never happen.
