This is the most amazing play. So much is going on.

South Africa has a lot of issues, on top of all the normal issues every human society has. The story of Helen, an old Afrikaaner living in her house in the bush, is faced with the problem of whether to go live in an old folks home.

But Helen is an artist. SHe has been making fabulous artwork, sculptures on her land. SHe calls them Mecca. Her friend, the only real friend she had, met her because of the beautiful statues. THey were drawn to one another because of the meaning of the art.

The troubles in South Africa, the treatment of women and blacks, and what art means in human life- all these are what make up the story. It's dark and beautiful and powerful.

within the first few weeks of the new school year, as a grade eleven student we have read THE ROAD TO MECCA, watched the film and ananlysed it in many areas. it its , for one a story that truly reaches the heart and makes the mind think.but its helens art that amazes me most and the way people judge and label.waht is art?and who even has the right or knowledge t say what art is and isn't?human beings are art.made by a creator.kettles and all othr house hold appliances are art.art is word, gesture, coluor, object, anything.it is all around us.art is life.
an inspiring read, recommended to all, especially south africans.

i thought it was ok... did not really hit any notes, it was too short to make it able to form a bond with any of the characters, there is so much of helens life left unsaid, it left me wanting that proper ending, tying up al loose ands
