The New Americans airs on PBS stations Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The series weaves together the stories of immigrants from Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Palestine, Mexico, and India.
Don't let the seven hour running time intimidate you. Record it if you don't have time to watch it every evening. The series pays off (one wishes it were shown over seven weeks, but then it might not have been considered an event nearly every PBS station is showing).
Several of the people who made Hoop Dreams are involved and the story that comes closest to that film (which came out 10 years ago and really needs to be reissued as a special edition DVD) follows prospects for the Dodgers from the Dominican Republic. A couple of the stories also take place in Chicago like Hoop Dreams (where documentary production company Kartemquin is based).
