The Most Overrated Movies Ever - Comments Page 3

The most overrated movies ever? Let the debate begin!

On a friend's site we have been trying to identify a new class of movies. "What are the worst movies that were supposed to be good? These can be overhyped, overpraised, overdone or over the top. But they have to have succeeded or reached some level of critical acclaim." They can be a waste of the budget or a waste of a good talent. The point is that you will be able to tell in your gut that it belongs on the list. While Cabin Boy is considered a bad movie, it does not belong on the list because nobody ever had any expectations for this Chris Elliott vehicle.…

"No Country for Old Men" may have been good, but it made me feel terrible. I wasn't enlightened, I wasn't made better, I wasn't moved, I wasn't anything. I just felt like I'd wasted my time watching a lot of blood. And I ordinarily love the Coen brothers.

"The Quiet Man" -- I love John Ford, John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara AND Ireland. But why do people love this movie so much. It was OK -- but I couldn't believe the characters would act as they do. The sexism was tough to take -- even considering the time.

    What about Dune.
Hyped by the books fans and just about unwatchable.
Terrible special effects, actors;Sting and Kyle MacLachan in the same movie!!!,and it was totally impossible to follow the plot.
Some books should stay as books.

Dune was clearly an impossibility from the beginning. I don't know why they made the film. There aren't THAT many fans of the novel. It would have needed a Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy treatment to even make sense. The story is way too big to cram into a single movie.

I felt terrible in the theater as one of my favorite sci-fi novels got turned into something that gave cause for the audience to giggle every 10 minutes.

"For truly he is the Kwisatz Haderach!" ... snicker, snicker, oh lord ...

" ... the weirding modules ..." ...snicker, snicker, pfffttt ...

And OBVIOUSLY, as much as I like Kyle MacLachlan (sp?), he is not the guy for that role. Sheesh.

I don't know why they made the film.

    Because David Lynch is nuts.

I think, given the TITLE of this opinion piece, that the movies in the piece, are pretty spot on. Showgirls, remember (those of you old enough:) received oooodles of hype....and was widely anticipated (for some weird reason).

Maybe this should be retitled The Most OVERHYPED Movies Ever. Some of them are very good movies (Contact, O Brother, The Player) but they were hyped to death, which really can do a movie in.

He is not saying these are good or bad movies.....
    remember.

Eh...his question, almost five years ago mind you, was "What are the worst movies that were supposed to be good?"

This is an article? It would have been nice to hear some specific reasons why these movies you've listed are 'overrated' in your opinion.

"Requiem for a Dream": boring dialogue, pedestrian plot, bad acting by everyone but Ellen Burstyn. In an odd way, its sensationalistic portrayal of the agony of addiction almost trivializes the real life experiences of addicts. I've had two different friends die of overdoses of two different drugs, so I know that drugs are bad. M'kay? I'm almost certain that dying alone on a filthy bathroom floor or dying from a cocaine-induced brain aneurysm is a hell of a lot worse than detoxing in jail or taking a dildo up the rear end, though having your arm amputated is probably right up there with my friends' experiences (RIP Poofy and Hades).

I am absolutely sick and tired of all these spoof movies that are coming out, Scary Movie, Epic Movie, and Date Movie, probably more, but I can't think of them. The gags are all just random pop-culture references that have nothing to do with any so-called plot. Exactly why I think Family Guy is overrated. I think Manitees really do write scripts for these people. You're never gonna find another spoof movie of the same calibur as Airplane!, and another spoof movie that critics hate that I loved, Johnny Dangerously.

i think some of you need to understand the word "overrated". which means it had to have some success either critically or by sales and didn't deserve it. not just because it's bad... like "Showgirls"
