The Hour, George and Noam

So Monday night I'm watching The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos. Before the show The Hour got off the drawing board, they wanted Noam Chomsky — well, the fans wanted him, at least. They begged for it. They pleaded. The Hour heard our cries and got us a fantastic 3-minute interview.

What the fuck is wrong with you, George? You book Noam Chomsky — arguably this world's leading thinker, the most quoted man in history, genius among geniuses — and all you give him is a measly 3 or 4 minutes? You could have gone off-formula on this one time and given him a whole half hour (and you still wouldn't have gotten enough out of him). Noam is the guy who said he can’t stand television interviews because he gets turned into a sound bite and this is how you show respect? How you show that your show is different from all the other current event’s shows on TV?

I can forgive all the time you get “experts” on events, mostly from the U.S. I can forgive you for your sweat stains in your arm-pits showing on TV. I can forgive all the times you rudely cut off your guests and I can forgive you for saying that French is easy to learn when you can’t even pronounce basic words and reduce our culture to poutine just to make a cool closer - no wait, I can't forgive that one.

But this, this just shows your lack of respect for important figures. In the end they still take a crap like we do, but for crying out loud, calling him MAN just doesn’t sound right and giving him about 4 minutes of air-time really diminishes the profundity of what he has to say.

You had your shot and you loaded blanks.

Can't remember when this interview was but I can't agree more. I think it was a few seasons ago so I will give him a bit of lee-way in that he is still learning and improving his craft. But 4 minutes is almost a waste of the viewer and Professor Chomsky's time.
