The Failure That is The Apprentice

When the first season of The Apprentice debuted in 2004, I was entranced. Entranced! It was a great show. It was different, and it had a full cast of wacky contestants. Remember Omarosa? Heidi? And who could forget Sam Solovey?

And then we had the second series, with all of those unforgettable folks, like...uh, well, that bow-tie guy, and the others. Good stuff.

For reasons still unknown (well, I don't know them), series 2 ended with a THREE hour finale. Three hours! What the hell was Trump thinking? As it would turn out, we'd soon learn that Trump wasn't thinking very clearly, because like five minutes after the THREE HOUR finale, series 3 started, this time with the novel "street smarts vs. book smarts" approach. Okay, Donald, now that's just too much Apprentice.

Which brings us full-circle to the current season, as we have not one, but TWO different versions of The Apprentice airing; one with Martha Stewart, and the other with the Donald. And it's too much. Not only is it too much, but the shows are deadly dull. And there aren't even any interesting crazy contestants. We just have the annoying crazy contestant, Jim, on Martha's show. I don't think I could even name someone from Trump's show. Bill? Jennifer? I dunno.

Supposedly Martha Stewart has a mean streak, but we don't even get to see that on her show. There's not a single ass-whupping to be found when we get to the "conference room" portion of the show, when someone is...er....let go? Martha can't even figure out a good firing catch phrase. She started with "You just don't fit it," but has abandonded it.

Let's review the exciting tasks Martha's contestants have participated in:

-- Designing a salad dressing;
-- Fixing up a hotel room;
-- A celebrity auction that had something to do with dogs;
-- And other stuff I cannot remember. Something with books? Flowers?

    I can't see Martha's show being renewed. It's a carbon copy, with less edge.

    I actually like both shows, but I don't think they should both be on that the exact same time. Overkill. They're jelling in my mind. Put Donald's on in the fall and Martha's on in the summer. Spread it out a bit.
