Some things in life you know you shouldn't laugh at, but by God you can't help yourself. Some things are just so ridiculous, that even though they may bring pain or seriously damaging events into being, you just can't suppress the chuckles.
For instance, when you see someone carrying heavy bags along a crowded pavement, and the bag breaks, and eggs and bottles and apples fall to the street, smattering and splattering and rolling along in a hilarious manner, while the victim of the unpredictable bout of bag-bounding has to chase the runaway groceries from under treading boots and unforgiving car tyres. This is a funny moment. Still, you try not to let on, and you go over and offer to help, hoping that the afflicted makes a joke themselves, so your mirth can burst free and roar and guffaw, and it's alright, cause they said a funny thing just there.
That's how Aileen Wuornos - The Selling Of A Serial Killer feels on occasion. The characters, the events, the whole damn fucked-up nature of the proceedings is so unbelievable as to be downright hilarious. Except a woman was killed as a result of these shenanigans. Not exactly eggs falling onto the pavement, then.
If you've seen the film with Charlize Theron shaving her eyebrows and shooting folks, then you'll have some idea who Aileen Wuornos was. The Duke has yet to see this award-snaring bout of dramatics, so I cannot comment on the similarities to the real-life events. Suffice to say, the movie version would need to be plenty demented to compete with this.
What happened was Aileen was a prostitute who murdered seven men that we know of, was captured and confessed, and prepared to face trial. Along came Steve Glazer, TV's Dr. Legal, who seems much more interested in his latest MOR compositions than he does in the actual business of, y'know, making sure Aileen isn't murdered. He is uncannily similar to Lionel Hutz from The Simpsons, except he's got a beard and an afro hair-style, and also, he's real. It is truly chilling to think that there are such men out there in legal-land who are handling cases and situations of this magnitude and complexity.
Aileen was adopted by a woman seemingly not much older than she herself, and this individual, with the assistance of the aforementioned Mr. Glazer, persuades the accused to plead guilty to the crimes, by way that she might be right with Jesus. She'll also be put to death, of course.
