The Duke De Mondo On "Starsky And Hutch"

If there's one thing the world of filmic affairs needs more of, it's a few gay police. There's the one from Six Feet Under, but to be honest he's much too serious to be a proper homosexual. There's one or two in the George Michael video. There's one in Village People - The Movie.

But how many more?

Not many, is the answer.

Praise the Lord, then, that Todd Phillips, him what did Old School and Hated - GG Allin Shits Himself, has brought not just one gay police, but another one, so as the first one has someone to talk to.

In fact, Todd Phillips is fast becoming a favourite camera-pointer here at Mondo Towers. Road Trip succeeded in achieving the unthinkable - making Tom Greene funny, and Old School is a masterpiece.

"We're streaking, honey!"

So when The Duke found out that this talented mirth-miester was taking the reins on the Starksy And Hutch remake that isn't really a remake, his interest was pricked, like a finger placed carelessly on a thorny branch.

Here's some other stuff what pleased The Duke

Not only was Todd Phillips directing this malarkey, but it wasn't going to be a by-the-numbers detective buddy flick either. It was going to be an homage, a witty, satirical and ever so slightly spoofy affair, something what you might call a "re-imagining", if those bloody monkeys hadn't made the term so unpleasant a couple years back.

Also, Phillips had got some of his Old School buddies to chip in, help raise a few chuckles and so on and so forth. So, to this end, we get Will Ferrell as a con with a hairnet, and also Norman Bates, as a moustachioed drug-baron type. Juliet Lewis and Snoop Doggy Dogg who doesn't have the Doggy anymore also join in the hi-jinks.

And, of course, there's Greg Fokker and Owen Wilson, both of whom are wonderful.

The Duke was slow to come around to Greg Fokker's charms, to be honest. Yes, I suppose he was quite amusing in There's Something About Cameron, and he was very charming in My Father, The Taxi Driver, but his performances never really jumped up and slapped The Duke across the jaw-flesh, never grabbed my hypothetical collar and gave me a good seeing to.

But consider my face slapped and my collar grossly manhandled, because here he turns in a truly wonderful performance. Make no mistake, Greg Fokker is a very funny individual.
