The Best Film of the Year - Comments Page 2

It all depends on exactly how you define "best."

Every reviewer puts out lists at the end of December:  the best list, the worst list, the what should win an Oscar list, the what will win an Oscar list, the if they’d only had a clue while making it list.  This year, I will eschew that impulse.  I’m simply going to tell you the best movie of the year.  Hands down.  No arguing about it, the answer is clear. …

the bond movie is a bond movie. that's not a bad thing, but it's still just a bond movie. action, sex, action, blood, cars, gadgets, etc. it's a variation on a formula.

i don't know what the best movie of the year is. haven't seen all that many new ones this year, but i can tell you that the best movie of the year is not ca-sino royale.

in the year of pan's labyrinth, letters from iwo jima, children of men, volver, united 93, the departed, brick, etc, it's just too much to ask of a bond movie.

as in music, however, people have their own opinions. like the guy who liked hard candy. feh! sitting there waiting for 15 minutes for some girl to chop off a guy's testicles is not my idea of a good, or even worthwhile, time. it's just torture. brick rocked though.

Steve C certainly gets the nod for most creative and amusing method of bypassing the spam filter in order to discuss the merits of Casino Royale (or its lack of merits, as the varying opinions may hold).

I certainly wish I could contribute more to this discussion of 2006's best films, but alas I have lacked the time and the funds to attend even a representative sampling of the year's cinematic offerings.

The previews I've caught on the Web make me fairly confident that if I had been able to see more movies this year, neither Casino Royale nor Brick nor Hard Candy would receive my vote.

I had hoped to see some more substantial discussion of the various candidates for the title, rather than TV and Film Guy's naked endorsement of power (represented in past, present, and future box office potential) as the sole criterion for judging. I also found little help in Ty's argument that indie status somehow confers magical blessedness on creepy little films that set out to be noir and end up merely mean-spirited.

I do have to thank those of you have helped confirm I made the right choice by avoiding Ty's darlings.
