Hey, I just watched The Ring on pay-per-view, and I don't own a VCR, so I can't make a copy, so welcome to the last seven days of TBOTCOTW!
(First line whited out cause I realized it contains a big spoiler! Sorry!)
The movie caught my eye mainly because I saw it had Naomi Watts in it, and I dig her. She's cute, and she was really good in Mulholland Drive, another freaky movie, and she's one of the many Aussie/Kiwi implants to hit Hollywood recently. Plus I felt like watching something that would get my heart beating, ya know? This one fit the bill. Scary, but not gory, and it didn't just stick to the horror movie cliches. Well, it had the freaky kid who understands too much, but that's a good cliche. Kinda reminded me of The Blair Witch Project, but I think that's just because of the homemade movie aspect. Because this one was scary.

SPOILER WARNING:
"it didn't just stick to the horror movie cliches"
1. Movie starts off with murdering a teenage girl - Check
2. Ghost trying to get revenge for her murder - Check
3. Freaky Kid - You at least admitted this one
Most of the rest of the story tries to distract you of how dumb the basic premise is. Either the tape is so scary it kills you (it's not) or the ghost somehow infects you by watching it. If the ghost has the power to do this, why does she need the video tape?
I just can't believe people think the Ring was scarier than a great movie like What Lies Beneath.

Hmmm... I knew I blew that somehow. At least they avoided the 'only the virgin survives' one.

1)it's a film. It's not real. That means you shouldn't analyze it closely, you should watch it and enjoy it (or not)
2)the ghost haunts the tape. When someone watches it, they somehow have to watch it to the end. Then in seven days' time the ghost kills them (excpet for that SPOILER which i won't mention and neither should you but if you've seen it you know what i mean)
When i went to see this movie, i was actually not expecting much, after all the bad reviews, but IMHO its actually pretty good. I think your summary fits the bill
