It is so infuriating to see a medium continue, even after decades of vigorous complaint from so many quarters, to lead the way in stupefying our population... They will insist that they're giving to people "what they want". It is an outright lie. Most people will watch TV because it's THERE just as most people will look up into the night sky because it's THERE. We can't do much about night sky nor should we try. It's fine just as it is - and hey, when you've got a hit, don't tinker...
But people can and WILL (save for those on the far end of the bell curve)allow themselves to be lifted up, for their eyes to be open, their minds to expand...
A tiny proof of this are my children... Growing up they watched reruns of M*A*S*H with dad. First my son, the oldest, would have explained to him why this line of dialogue was not only funny but SMART. He learned what a double entendre was and how to spot them. He saw the interplay between a moment of hilarity and a moment later one of sadness or poignancy. It was so endearing to watch him, in turn, "teach" his sister, who of course wanted to be included in all things "daddy and brother".
My children would in turn try and get their friends to watch M*A*S*H. They repeated the same sad results for the most part. "Dad, you should have seen their eyes! They just glazed over! They didn't get it! Dad! He (she) doesn't even know what one of those double entendre things are!"
Slowly they would educate their friends, and a good number of them became hooked on the show...
So in their own little way my children have proved what the networks insist is impossible, that you can bring an intelligent show to the people but you can't make them think....
And, for those who might be thinking this... Of course there is room for good escapism. God knows we need it. Most of what we're faced with today doesn't even qualify to be in the same phylum of escapism...

Great site. YES..please. Do NOT cancel Studio 60. I too was a huge fan of Sports Night. BRILLIANT show.
and, West Wing, of course..and it was REALLY getting back to its old luster when NBC pulled the plug..It really is time for HBO or someone to step up to the plate and pick up these amazing shows ( Six Feet Under....Brilliant as well).

The really ridicules part of all this is what they "replaced" S60 with... The Black Donnellys" (hahahahaha) a show that they MUST have scraped from the dreggs of the heap of bad writing they get every year...
I thought I might have been alone about feeling that way when reading the "reviews" on iTunes (which I now am sure "pay per post" reviews) till I read Bryan Kristopowitz article on 411mania.com .
NBC has just lost it... The fact is that there isn't another show on the network is do watch and as a matter of fact it may be time to just remove the channel altogether... that way when I do channel surf I won't have to waste time passing it by.

Obviously Studio 60 was cancelled a long while ago...but I just needed a place to say that 'Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip' was one of the best shows I have watched on TV! It is the kind of show that SHOULD be on television because it's quick, current, and has soul. I just finished watching the whole season front to back, and the fact that I don't have the next season to explore is a real bummer.
Why can't we mix a little smart in there amongst all the skin deep/adrenal overloads.
