This is a film to look for in theaters this coming year. I think that it will do very well with the general public.
Motherhood
I think it might be the film festival fatigue or something, but I related to Uma Thurman’s character, Eliza, in Motherhood. Not because I’ve ever been a mother or a parent, but because I, too, feel exhausted.
Motherhood focuses on a day in the life of a mom in New York. Like every mother she’s got an entire list of things to do and only one day to do it in — everything from taking the kids to the park, moving the car so the street sweeper can get through, to the culminating event of setting up her daughter’s birthday party. On top of all that she is trying to enter a writing contest where she can become a full-time columnist for Lunchbox Magazine, only the entry is due by midnight.
Instead of doing the selfish thing and locking the kids in a room until she can finish her article, she does all the things a loving mother does to help her kids throughout the day. She hardly has any time for herself, and her husband, played by Anthony Edwards, doesn’t seem to be much of a help. He’s more interested in old books than he is in his wife, or so it seems.
Most of the time the film’s comedy seems a little forced, like they were trying a little too hard to get laughs. But, the film is sincere in its portrayal of mothers in a positive light. They are the unsung heroes of society, and they deserve to be acknowledged for their services.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go call my mom.
