Stylista's Saving Graces

Stylista arrived on television as one of Tyra Banks’ brain children — the bastard step-child that was aired after America’s Next Top Model. Luckily for the four people who missed the finale, Johanna, the one with little experience but lots of passion and ruffled  shirts, beat DyShaun. Even on a good day, Stylista struggled to hit the two million viewer mark. It was clearly placed as mid-season fluffer while other shows were on hiatus. Most critics have panned the show, but for some reason I was one of the million viewers who stuck with the train wreck in hopes of a good accident. Here are some of the show's few redeeming qualities:

The Opening Music – For some reason, I love the opening theme. Everyone seems happy to be a contestant, walking around the streets of New York, and eager to work for Elle. The music sounds like a swanky elevator in a boutique going up and down. The only other fashion-based show that had a great theme song was the BBC comedy Are You Being Served?

Nigel Barker – My ears perked when I heard a random British man speaking at the opening. I thought, “Maybe it's Nigel Barker,” but then I realized that America’s Next Top Model’s credits already passed. For a moment I forgot that Tyra had a hand in creating this show. Then, in a "Name the Guests" challenge, Nigel shows up as one of the invited guests. I still find it unfair for the group that had to guess who Nigel Barker was. Out of everyone they mentioned (possibly with the exception of baseball player David Wright) the other guests that weren’t famous featured on a pop-cultural standpoint. Still, it’s interesting to see Nigel on Tyra’s short leash forced to show up at a fake party.

Ugly Danielle – You knew when they cast the fat girl with the glasses, they would have given her some form of Ugly Betty edit. Then she didn’t. She came off almost normal (as normal as a reality television contestant could get) and I even felt bad for her when she couldn’t find clothes in the Elle closet because she was too big. She unfortunately never really took the lead on any challenges and she was sent home. Danielle became that one person who actually looked like they applied and weren’t just scouted.
