It seems as though the truth hurts, and I just can’t figure out why that has to be the case. And this may hurt, but I have to say it anyway — last night, those Housewives proved once again that they’re straying farther and farther from what once made the show great.
First up, we have the incredibly obnoxious, the show would be better off without her and everything she stands for, Edie Britt. When Edie attempts to seduce Carlos, Carlos is eventually smart enough to realize what’s going on and calls her on using her own child to try and bait him into having sex with her. And then, in a completely surprising twist, and I can’t imagine how this is the case, Edie becomes angry at Carlos for telling her he knows what’s going on. She is not, at this point, upset with herself for her incredibly self-centered actions and her maltreatment of her own child, no, she’s upset with Carlos for having the audacity to call her on it.
By the end of the episode Edie successfully seduces Carlos with what I’m sure is either a ploy or a fleeting change of heart, where she “reveals her true self” by getting naked. It’s insane. Carlos bought it, but it’s still insane. How is this man not still upset that she used a young child to try and have sex with him? My money is on the fact that Edie was still just trying to get some and that an “honesty is the best policy” approach seemed like the best way to succeed in that endeavor. The whole thing is disgusting.
Actually, the whole show is disgusting, and not disgusting in a juicy, pulpy, fun way like the first season. It’s disgusting in a 'these characters have become so vile and self-centered and self-serving' way that it’s hard to watch.
Gaby, who has been sliding downhill into a pit of her own vanity for at least a season (and probably closer to a season and a half), sunk to a new low last night by stealing dresses of the man she’s only dating because of his money’s ex-wife. Seriously. She lies to the maid to get into the house where the clothes are, runs for the closet, takes off her coat revealing that she’s only wearing skivvies underneath (it’s not even sweeps), and throws on as many outfits as she can before running back out of the house. What a wretched waste of time this woman has become. She’s a horrid, vapid woman and while she was once deserving of pity, she is now simply repugnant.

I must say that I disagree with the above opinion. Desperate Housewives is not just an edgy drama; it is primarily a comedy series. The scene with Gabby stealing the dress was a low point for her character in a moral sense, but it was pretty funny. Sometimes the show has the lead characters do things for no other reason that the fact that most people will find them funny. It has done that since season one, and there is nothing wrong with that.
And Edie's character is temporarily getting more exposure due to Marcia Cross's absence (they need to fill the time that was taken up by the Van de Camp/ Hodge storyline); it was not so much that the producers decided to overload on Edie as much as that they needed to cope with Cross-related complications. Having said that, I would also like to point out that Edie is a fan favorite; she was not even supposed to be a regular character at the time of the show's initial production, and because of positive viewer reception, she became the main supporting character; Nicollette Sheridan's name is billed immediatly after the four leads in the opening credits.
As far as the opinion expressed, "the “mystery” that the season is supposed to be about has completely vanished. Everyone knew Marcia Cross was pregnant heading into this season, so maybe having the mystery surround her character wasn’t the brightest move on the part of the producers," I must take issue with this statement in particular. The season three central mystery, which did center around Bree (as stated by the above opinion), was 'planted' in the series long before Cross announced her pregnancy. The mystery did not simply start with the first episode of the current season; character introductions and plot twists for the Bree/Orson mystery began to appear in the second half of season two. These season-long mysteries are planned long in advance (whether we've noticed them or not, plot twists relevant to season four have already made appearances). That means that the season three mystery was likely mapped out near the end of 2005; Cross announced her pregnancy in the summer of 2006. Cross' pregnancy created a lot of complications that the show struggled to work out; I personally think that the show did pretty well with the absence, considering that Bree is so essential to the show's appeal.
While the drama of the series is not what it once was - the show has temporarily taken a break from exploring the lives and roles that many suburban women fill, like the working mom, the 40-something divorcee grappling with singlehood, and the perfect mom who is essentially despised by other mothers - the actual lough-out-loud comedy has gotten better. I don't think DH should be written off; let it grapple with the absence of its most beloved character, and once in a while - when the drama gets thin - just sit back and laugh. Worse shows have been given more slack for their shortcomings than DH has been for its (which I think is only because we love it so much).

I have to agree with MA DH fan. I think this show has gotten better this year. Having the leads interact more and less cloak and dagger have made DH a fizzy watchable Sunday night cocktail. Plus, the supermarket episode was one of the best hours of television in 2006.
I consider one of Nicolette Sheridan's fans and a fan of Edie. Marc Cherry wanted DH to be a dark spoof of soap operas and every soap needs a bitch. Edie fills that role but is also multi-dimensional, thanks in large part to Sheridan.
The last two years have been filled with the "Bree in peril" storylines. I enjoy Marcia Cross but I have to admit I'm enjoying the break.

This is a great show. I don't think you can expect each and every epsode to be drama filled; this is the best season of the show. I think that people should open their minds more.

I think it's great that so many people are so happy with the show still. However, you're all apparently in the minority as the show's ratings fell to a three year low this past Sunday. As noted in this article.

Again, I think you are being overly pessimistic. DH had been dormant for five weeks before Sunday's new episode, which probably contributed to a ratings decline. The show also aired on Easter Sunday; ratings were down for shows accross the board this past Sunday (as exemplified by the fact that Sunday's show was DH's lowest-rated ever, yet it was still by the far the most-watched show that night).
Overall season 3 ratings are down, but the ratings earned by seasons 1 and 2 set unrealistically high standards. I'll change my mind about this when the show drops from the top 10.
