So So You Think You Can Dance aired its second episode last night, this one featuring the Los Angeles auditions. Last week, we spent two hours in Chicago and New York following the selections of those to go onto Hollywood from those cities. With those selections done, we have only a limited number of slots left in the fifty dancers needed for Hollywood, twenty-five male and twenty-five female.
This week’s show was ninety minutes in length, and I felt myself asking why before I even watched the show. I checked for the show on my television guide, and I just shook my head at the length. Once the show began, I continued to do this. I think this show could have been handled within an hour easily.
This week we got to see a lot of dancers - some great, and some not so great. I’m not even sure how they made it on television because a lot of the good dancers that were picked to go through the show weren’t even shown with their initial auditions.
The judges also seemed a bit harsh to some, and some have even mentioned that the judges were prejudiced to big girls that auditioned. These females were immediately eliminated in both Los Angeles and New York while bigger males were pushed on through to Hollywood.
I truly had high hopes for this show, and in the show's preview for next week, I can hopefully see a different format coming forth. Now that the dancers have been picked, and now that they move on to work with five different choreographers. Hopefully with the selections now done, this show won’t be so painful to watch.
A quick update on Dancing with the Stars, ABC’s popular summer dance program. Earlier this week, ABC and Kelly Monaco participated in a conference in which questions about the final results were asked by critics. Those critics asked if favoritism played a part in the selection of Kelly because she is a star on an ABC daytime television show. One of those asked went so far to state that they didn’t even know that Kelly was on an ABC show.
ABC does plan to answer critics by making a change in the format of the show before its return. A thirty minute results show will be added each week. This is similar to what American Idol does. I wonder if this will solve the problems with the program.
