SAG Nominations: Snubs and Surprises - Page 4

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
Patricia Arquette / MEDIUM – Allison Dubois - NBC
Edie Falco / THE SOPRANOS – Carmela Soprano - HBO
Mariska Hargitay / LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT – Det. Olivia Benson - NBC
Kyra Sedgwick / THE CLOSER – Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson - TNT
Chandra Wilson / GREY’S ANATOMY – Dr. Miranda Bailey - ABC

Thoughts: I think Chandra Wilson is one of the most overrated actresses in television, and I think there are other actresses from her show that deserve the nod more than she does. With that said, I don't think she'll win anyway, and I don't think her co-stars would've won either, so it's irrelevant. Every other actress besides Wilson deserves a win in this category, but my vote goes to Arquette who is probably the most genuinely real talent on television. I'd love to see Sedgwick finally win something for The Closer, but I just don't see it happening.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin / 30 ROCK – Jack Donaghy - NBC
Steve Carell / THE OFFICE – Michael Scott - NBC
Jason Lee / MY NAME IS EARL – Earl Hicke - NBC
Jeremy Piven / ENTOURAGE – Ari Gold - HBO
Tony Shalhoub / MONK – Adrian Monk - USA

Thoughts: If Tony Shalhoub wins again I just might puke all over my television screen. Yes, he's good as Monk, but honestly, let's move on. Any of the actors in this category would be deserving if they won, but I'd love to see either Steve Carell or Jeremy Piven take the statue this year. Jason Lee and Alec Baldwin are maybes.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
America Ferrera / UGLY BETTY – Betty Suarez - ABC
Felicity Huffman / DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES – Lynette - ABC
Julia Louis-Dreyfus / THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE – Christine Campbell - CBS
Megan Mullally / WILL & GRACE – Karen Walker - NBC
Mary-Louise Parker / WEEDS – Nancy Botwin - Showtime
Jaime Pressly / MY NAME IS EARL – Joy - NBC

Thoughts: Please, please, please do not give this to Megan Mullally YET again. I'm still fuming over the fact that Marcia Cross has been disgustingly snubbed once again by an award show, but I could rant about that forever, so let's move on.  I have a feeling either Mary-Louise Parker or Julia Louis-Dreyfus will win this year. America Ferrera is great, but I see her in the same boat as Ryan Gosling.  She should be happy for the nomination.

Looks like Little Miss Sunshine and Dreamgirls tied with Babel for 3 nominations each.

The Departed could practically fill the male leading and supporting categories by itself. DiCaprio is clearly in a leading role, so I don't understand SAG's reasoning. Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson gave two of the very best supporting performances of the year. And Matt Damon, excellent in both The Departed and The Good Shepherd, had the bad luck to have those roles during such a competitive year.

    Yet more awards ...

Those entertainers must be doing some fine entertainment work to be handing out entertainment awards to entertainers every two weeks or so.

I note that the entertainment award presentation ceremonies are themselves often considered entertainment, so why not extend the entertainment award season and have entertainment awards for the best entertainment award shows. It could be hosted by entertainers and be very entertaining, with the entertainers getting all dressed up and interviewed by other entertainers on the red carpet. etc. Yeah, there's an idea.

Dreamgirls deserved it's nominations. It was extremely well done and the whole cast did a great job. I’ve never seen the Broadway production but I know Jennifer Hudson’s voice made me sit up and take notice!
