SAG Nominations: Snubs and Surprises - Page 3

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Alan Arkin - Grandpa
Abigail Breslin - Olive
Steve Carell - Frank
Toni Collette - Sheryl
Paul Dano - Dwayne
Greg Kinnear - Richard

Thoughts: This is a tough one because I think all of the casts are deserving, minus maybe Dreamgirls which really has no chance of winning here. Most critics are labelling the film "The Jennifer Hudson Show," and that's pretty much what it is. Little Miss Sunshine, The Departed, and Bobby will most likely battle it out for the win. Bobby has the advantage of having more stars in it than the sky itself, and The Departed has the advantage of mega-box office gold.

PRIMETIME TELEVISION

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Thomas Haden Church / BROKEN TRAIL – Tom Harte - AMC
Robert Duvall / BROKEN TRAIL – Print Ritter - AMC
Jeremy Irons / ELIZABETH I – Earl of Leicester - HBO
William H. Macy / NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES – Clyde Umney - TNT
Matthew Perry / THE RON CLARK STORY – Ron Clark - TNT

Thoughts: I think here it's between Jeremy Irons and Robert Duvall. Matthew Perry's nomination is charity, and Macy was nominated on his name alone. In the end, I think Irons will take the statue.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Annette Bening / MRS. HARRIS – Jean Harris - HBO
Shirley Jones / HIDDEN PLACES – Aunt Batty - Hallmark Channel
Cloris Leachman / MRS. HARRIS – Tarnower’s Sister - HBO
Helen Mirren / ELIZABETH I – Elizabeth I - HBO
Greta Scacchi / BROKEN TRAIL – Nola Johns - AMC

Thoughts: Two words - Helen Mirren. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
James Gandolfini / THE SOPRANOS – Tony Soprano - HBO
Michael C. Hall / DEXTER – Dexter Morgan - Showtime
Hugh Laurie / HOUSE – Dr. Gregory House - FOX
James Spader / BOSTON LEGAL – Alan Shore - ABC
Kiefer Sutherland / 24 – Jack Bauer - FOX

Thoughts: It was lovely to see Michael C. Hall nominated for his excellent portrayal of Dexter on Showtime's new hit series, especially since he never got the accolades he deserved for his work on Six Feet Under. However, I don't think he has much chance of winning. This will be a steel cage match between Hugh Laurie and Kiefer Sutherland.  I'm hoping the former comes out on top.

Looks like Little Miss Sunshine and Dreamgirls tied with Babel for 3 nominations each.

The Departed could practically fill the male leading and supporting categories by itself. DiCaprio is clearly in a leading role, so I don't understand SAG's reasoning. Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson gave two of the very best supporting performances of the year. And Matt Damon, excellent in both The Departed and The Good Shepherd, had the bad luck to have those roles during such a competitive year.

    Yet more awards ...

Those entertainers must be doing some fine entertainment work to be handing out entertainment awards to entertainers every two weeks or so.

I note that the entertainment award presentation ceremonies are themselves often considered entertainment, so why not extend the entertainment award season and have entertainment awards for the best entertainment award shows. It could be hosted by entertainers and be very entertaining, with the entertainers getting all dressed up and interviewed by other entertainers on the red carpet. etc. Yeah, there's an idea.

Dreamgirls deserved it's nominations. It was extremely well done and the whole cast did a great job. I’ve never seen the Broadway production but I know Jennifer Hudson’s voice made me sit up and take notice!
