The 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning by previous SAG Award winners Sandra Oh and Elijah Wood. There were a few surprises that snuck in as well as some major snubs.The Brad Pitt/Cate Blanchett film Babel garnered the most nominations out of all the motion pictures, with three nods – one being for Best Ensemble. HBO drama The Sopranos dominated the television categories with three nominations, more than any other series – including a Best Ensemble nod, as well as nods for both lead actors, Edie Falco and James Gandolfini. There was a tie in the Female Actor In A Comedy Series category, so there are six nominees there instead of the normal five.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Leonardo DiCaprio / BLOOD DIAMOND – Archer - Warner Bros. Pictures
Ryan Gosling / HALF NELSON – Dan Dunne - THINKFilm
Peter O’Toole / VENUS – Maurice - Miramax Films
Will Smith / THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS – Chris Gardner - Sony Pictures
Forest Whitaker / THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND – Idi Amin - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Thoughts: Unlike at the Golden Globes where his two performances will probably split his votes, Leo might actually have a chance of a win here. This is a tough category, so it honestly could go to any of these actors - except probably Ryan Gosling. His nomination was the win here - and a big one considering he's a young actor. He probably kept Sacha Baron Cohen from being nominated, and probably will do so at the Oscars as well.

Penelope Cruz / VOLVER – Raimunda - Sony Pictures Classics
Judi Dench / NOTES ON A SCANDAL – Barbara Covett - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Helen Mirren / THE QUEEN – The Queen - Miramax Films.
Meryl Streep / THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA – Miranda Priestly - 20th Century Fox
Kate Winslet / LITTLE CHILDREN – Sarah Pierce - New Line Cinema
Thoughts: These nominations here seem to be a lock for these five ladies, but once again I think Kate Winslet will be left empty-handed. Mirren, Streep, and Cruz probably have the most chance of winning, with Dench possibly pulling out a win if the votes are split. This, and the Best Actor race will be the most competitive here, and at Oscar time.

Looks like Little Miss Sunshine and Dreamgirls tied with Babel for 3 nominations each.
The Departed could practically fill the male leading and supporting categories by itself. DiCaprio is clearly in a leading role, so I don't understand SAG's reasoning. Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson gave two of the very best supporting performances of the year. And Matt Damon, excellent in both The Departed and The Good Shepherd, had the bad luck to have those roles during such a competitive year.

Those entertainers must be doing some fine entertainment work to be handing out entertainment awards to entertainers every two weeks or so.
I note that the entertainment award presentation ceremonies are themselves often considered entertainment, so why not extend the entertainment award season and have entertainment awards for the best entertainment award shows. It could be hosted by entertainers and be very entertaining, with the entertainers getting all dressed up and interviewed by other entertainers on the red carpet. etc. Yeah, there's an idea.

Dreamgirls deserved it's nominations. It was extremely well done and the whole cast did a great job. I’ve never seen the Broadway production but I know Jennifer Hudson’s voice made me sit up and take notice!
