Ok, so tonight I'm pulling out the last golden oldie. The last movie that I saw before I decided to go on the quest to blog all the Oscar nominees. Road to Perdition stars Paul Newman, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
This was a pretty good movie. A plot that keeps moving, good actors, and a director with a real visual style. But it had its problems, too. It was a bit slow at times, and the idea of turning Jude Law into an ugly freak was just laughable. Have you seen how hot this man is? By Jebus, I'd fuck him.
So I should concentrate on Newman's performance, probably, since he's the only nominee. Amazing, that, really. Since when has Tom Hanks turned in two (also Catch Me if You Can) critically aclaimed performances and not been nominated for Best Actor? I can't remember when, either. Oh well, though, he'll just have to enjoy this year from the audience.
Newman was good. When he had to choose between his ne'er-do-well real son, and the solid, faithful man who was like a son, he truly seemed conflicted. The choice was obvious, you have to go with blood, but at what price? The scene with Newman and Hanks playing a piano duet while the son looks on with envy was very well done, not overplayed at all by either primary actor.
I don't think Newman will win. He's in probably the most contested category of the awards this year. All four other actors have been applauded for their performances, and Newman's had his days in the sun. Give this award to Walken or Chris Cooper.
