Tracey Ullman is one of the few British female comedians to truly make the jump to the US (or America, as they call it). This four-disc DVD set collects the complete third and fourth seasons of her hit, Emmy-winning show which was broadcast on HBO in 1998-1999. I did not see these skits during their initial broadcast, but I find them terribly amusing, another great example of her talent. It's no wonder Tracey came back with her State of the Union… series.
After watching the DVDs, it's clear that many British mimics and character comedians have nicked her style and made it their own. Ullman does it best, however, and this set clearly demonstrates the talent that this woman is in the end. It's rare that I actually laugh out loud these days at a telly show, but her "make-up artist to the stars" character is hilarious. Of course, being in the US she gets all manner of stars to show up, including Billy Connelly and Helen Mirren. Hugh Laurie, of House fame, appears as does Cheech Marin (playing a stoner, naturally).
If you are a fan of mimicry and character driven sketch comedy then this is a DVD set for you. And we all need a good laugh now and again.
Not surprisingly, it's rated TV14 for language and drug references.
