Even when I was little, I was never really been big on Disney princesses. Aladdin and The Little Mermaid were okay. Snow White was boring. Don't get me started on Belle from The Beauty and the Beast. Despite the good reviews, I really didn't want to see The Princess and The Frog. But I promised my sister I'd see it, so off we went.
The story follows a young African American woman, Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) in New Orleans. She's hard-working and all she wants to do is run her own restaurant. She has a friend named Charlotte (Jennifer Cody). Charlotte's dream in life is to marry a prince. When Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) comes into town, Charlotte is desperate to marry him. But then our villain, the Shadow Man (Keith David), transforms Prince Naveen into a frog. Naveen convinces Tiana to kiss him, which causes her to become a frog as well.
The highlight of the movie is Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley), an alligator that Naveen and Tiana meet in the swamps. He's very hyper and loves jazz. He makes the movie. His one-liners had me laughing throughout the movie, which got me a ton of weird looks from the rest of the theater.
No Disney movie is complete without lots of music. Overall, the music is okay, but the best song is “When We're Human," sung by Tiana, Naveen, and Louis in the swamps.
For the first ten minutes, this was just an annoying Disney movie and I am definitely not the target demographic. But then, something changed. The annoying, wishy-washy plot complete with the extra-annoying characters became good. And soon, I actually began to enjoy the film. By the end, it became my favorite Disney movie of all time.
This movie was so good, I'm planning on seeing again on Wednesday. I would definitely recommend it. It is a lot of fun for the entire family.
