Reviews in Brief: After.Life (2009)

Part of: Reviews in Brief

The 411: After a horrific car accident, Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci) wakes up to find the local funeral director, Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson), preparing her body for her funeral. Confused, terrified, and feeling still very much alive, Anna doesn't believe she's dead, despite the funeral director's reassurances that she's merely in transition to the afterlife. Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her.

The Good: Directed by Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, After.Life is a new twist on a possible horror franchise. It's a pretty original story, not seen in another movie like this, and that's always good. The movie's actually more of a thriller than a horror movie but will keep you on your toes. It'll make you wonder if she's right in thinking she's not dead or if the funeral director is the one who's special. Throughout the movie, they drop hints to let you figure it out on your own and make up your mind about what you think is happening.

The Bad: The movie has a sequel already in the making by the time the credits roll. This movie, as it is a pretty original idea, should not make the same mistake that was made with the Saw and even Hostel franchises and continue to make sequel after sequel year after year.

The Last Word: A movie that will have you at the edge of your seat and your mind going from beginning to end. Let's see if you can figure out what the truth is!

Theater, DVD, or Cable: If you're into thrillers, you should enjoy it in a theater.
