Review: Lost Season Premiere

The much anticipated season premiere of Lost has come and gone. We can all breath a huge sigh of relief that none of the suspense we've come to expect with the series was "lost" over the summer.

"Man of Science, Man of Faith"

The show began with our merry band of castaway explorers (minus the dead doctor, the ones who stayed back at the cave, and the group who set off on the raft) gathered at the mysterious hatch. Deep down below is a mysterious figure preening and primping while listening to "Make Your Own Kind of Music" by Mama Cass. And, then mysterious figure hears the castaways opening the hatch. Slam, bang, boom! The figure kicks into high gear, readying for intruders.

Above ground, Jack and the gang decide they've done enough for the evening. Well, Locke and Kate aren't convinced they should wait, but pretend to go along with the plan.

In the meantime, Shannon and Sayid are out looking for Walt's dog. Sayid wants to go back to the cave, where it's safe, but Shannon is determined to find the dog. "I was asked to do this one thing and I can't let Walt down." As they continue on their quest, they spot the dog, Vincent. In their attempt to close in on Vincent from opposite directions, Shannon and Sayid become separated. While separated, Shannon "sees" Walt, dripping wet and talking. She can't make out what he's saying and is becoming increasingly confused. Sayid catches up with her and the vision of Walt disappears.

In a flashback, we learn more about Jack pre-Oceanic Flight 815. When Jack first meets his wife, Sarah, she's badly broken, the result of a car wreck. His efforts to save her pay off, but to what end? Her fiance isn't exactly thrilled by the prospect of having to care for someone who can't even go to the bathroom on her own. A risky surgery is needed to keep Sarah alive. After the surgery, Jack is full of guilt and frustration. Despite his best efforts, Sarah will never walk again. To work out his anger, he heads to a stadium and begins running up and down the steps. Another runner is doing the same thing, but slightly faster than Jack. Jack pushes himself harder, twisting his ankle in the process. The other runner comes to his aid. As it turns out, the man, Desmond, offers some advice to Jack, sending him back to the hospital, back to Sarah's room. When Sarah awakens, she tells Jack he smells. "I tried to shower off," he says and then launches into a bit of a pity party, ending with "you'll never walk again." Sarah admonishes him and asks, "if that's the case, how is it possible that I can move my toes?" Miraculously, she can. She can move, she can feel, and Jack's self-inflicted torture is over, sort of.

I came in late on the Lost series. I pretty much saw last season's finale and that was it. I loved it though and got hooked. With this premiere I wasn't disappointed and can't wait to see more of it.

You know, I got hooked on LOST last year, but I started finding it manipulative. The premiere really ticked me off. I know the show relies heavily on flashbacks, but this was too much. I wanted to know about those people on the raft. I didn't feel like waiting another week. And I hated the way the hatch thing was handled. More manipulation.

I know most people are eating this up, but LOST just "lost" me, and I'm not going back.

Without the flashbacks, you have no way of knowing how some of the characters are connected. I like them.

And next week we find out about the castaways on the raft!

I find Lost to be a lesson in patience, which I accept. The strength is in its character analysis as much as it is having action each week.

The flashbacks seem relevant to me. Especially this premiere's, as not only did it reflect Jack's bedside manner with his future wife juxtaposed against when he spoke to the group, but his meeting Desmond who turns out to be living under the hatch.

One minor thing, it wasn't a vine rope, rather it was electical cabling salvaged from the airplane. That's why it was cutting Locke's hands up so badly.
