Review: Hitch

This film is a surprise. It has all the elements of a stock and useless movie, but it is actually a thoughtful and fresh piece of fluff. Will Smith plays Hitch, a confident yet lonely dating consultant. He meets his match when he falls for a cynical reporter named Sara, played by the unimpressive Eva Mendes.

If the story were only about these two characters, this movie would have been a bore. The real heart, and the best sequences, of the film involves one of Hitch’s clients Albert (Kevin James) and his quest for the heart of a rich socialite. James is the real charm of the piece. It is clear that with the right projects, Kevin James can easily make the transition to the big screen. James has a natural goofball quality that is very endearing and works perfect here.

Smith does a great job as well carrying the film. He is in his element with straight comedy, and it is good to see him at work. The only weak spot in the movie is Eva Mendes. She’s a passable actress, lacks any real screen presence. Perhaps this will come out as her career progresses, but it’s certainly not in play right now.

The credit for the piece goes to director Andy Tennant and first-time screenwriter Kevin Bisch. Bisch has a sharp comedic tongue and a knack for creating likable characters. His script has a realness to it that is very welcoming.

Tennant is clearly is strong in comedy as well. His handling of the scenes between James and Smith are particularly strong. He doesn’t get in their way and allows the actors to take some time to build the comedic tension. He also knows how to deliver a solid set up and following payoff. In many cases, knowing how to slip in a set up for a joke is more important than the delivery of the payoff. Being able to insert a set up into a story can be a dangerous thing. If you’re a hack and just slug something in you’ll project “This is something that is relevant and will come back later in the film!” Tennant does a great job of slipping these elements into his work with a natural and unassuming ease.

With all of this gushing I’ve been up to, it’s easy to see I strongly recommend this film.

I think you're right all the way on this. In fact, I think Smith and James could be a great comic team in other movies. They should definitely do another film together.

Oh, and as for Eva Mendes, I think she's a fine looking woman. I don't know if she needed to be a good actress for this role, just beautiful.

    Anyway, nice article.

Eva Mendes doesn't have to be a talented actress.....She's absolutely gorgeous!
