Review: Hide and Seek

"Come out, come out, wherever you are..."

In the film Hide and Seek starring Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning, this childhood singsong phrase loses its innocence entirely.

When psychologist David Callaway's (De Niro) wife (Amy Irving) is found dead of an apparent suicide in a bathtub, he packs his devastated daughter Emily (Fanning) up and moves the two to upstate New York to live in an isolated small country town.

From the moment they move there, there seems to be an air of mystery and oddity that surrounds the situation, the town, and the suspicious looks exchanged between townfolk and Callaway.

Soon it is discovered that Emily has an "invisible" friend 'Charlie' who has a sinister side, alarming Dr. Callaway.

This movie is intense and chilling. It keeps you guessing and the actors do a fantastic job with their characters. Dakota Fanning is one of the most talented child actors I've ever seen in film, and this film takes her talent to the edge.

This film didn't get very good reviews on Amazon, but my criteria is a bit different perhaps. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

The ending will shock the hell out of you and leave you gaping, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you.

Once I watched the alternative endings, however, I found that I prefer one of the alternative endings to the actual ending of the movie.
