Review: Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo - Racist, Homophobic Stereotypes and ... Rob Schneider

Well let's start off by saying this is another Happy Madison production and we all know (at least I hope we do) that the Adam Sandler aka SNL production house do not make good movies. They take old Saturday Night Live sketches and stretch that same sketch in an hour and a half movie to try and make profit. Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo or its sequel Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo is no different.

Let's get another thing clear and out of the way, the only Saturday Night Live movie that I liked was Wayne's World and that was back in the day when SNL was cool and Mike Myers and Dana Carvey were peaking in their careers. Now let's get to the point where Rob Schneider is truly not a lead. Sure he can make things work as a sidekick or a cameo but a lead is just way to demanding even if it means as a cheap male gigolo who only gets weird clients.

Almost every joke that was used in the original Deuce Bigalow is re-used in this sequel making it less funny. If you also find that crude humour, racist and homophobic stereotypes to be funny then please go see the movie, you will probably enjoy it. Even worse: you see the jokes a mile away and notably the "script" (please note that I say that as lightly as I can) is pretty much a waste... surprisingly it was written by Rob Schneider himself. Every possible racial stereotype is used throughout the movie, as Michael Jackson says it doesn't matter if you are black or white... chinese, canadian, dutch or greek.

Did I not laugh at all? Of course I laughed a few times and more surprisingly it wasn't at the script nor the performances. Eddie Griffin plays his typical fast talking but trying to remain cool character. As for the rest nothing to report other than dud performances. Is this movie worth it? I guess if you were somehow a fan of the original this one is bearable to watch, but if you are looking for intelligent movies ... run away and don't look back.

So the movie was exactly as advertised. What did you expect?

This movie may set a record for the lowest overall reviews I've ever seen.

It almost makes me want to see the train-wreck.

    That is all.

Yr not far off, Bob - tomatometer rating of 9% - the same as Catwoman

    Truly, what were you expecting?

I got dragged to the first one by a jock roommate who actually thought it was funny. I tried not to cry as I watched the minutes of my life being sucked away by that garbage.

I often wonder exactly what the demographic is of people who watch these sorts of movies? 90% male? 13-19 years old? About the same as the Adam Sandler movies?

Another observation: Have you noticed how the new crop of actors (loosely used) have these cliques that appear in all the movies of any members of these groups? For example: How many of Adam Sandler's movies have Rob Schneider and Eddie Griffin appeared in? Another clique is the Owen Wilson-Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn group. They always seem to pop-up somewhere in each others films.

I find that an interesting - if bizarre - new Hollywood phenomenon. Or is it new?

    Cheers,

    Ron

Well there was the Rat Pack, then the Brat Pack, now we have the Frat Pack which I believe is comprised of Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, and couple more I can't think of right now....

It's amazing that this movie can even make it out of the can. Actually, my opinion, the best post SNL movies are the AUSTIN POWERS trilogy. Myers wrote the sketches for SNL but wisely decided not to submit them. Smart guy.

Let's think of the "great" post-SNL movies and weep:

    SUPERSTAR (simply dreadful)

    IT'S PAT ( it's awful)

    DEUCE (x2) (twice the pain)

BLUES BROTHERS (x2) (they really sucked)

    TOMMY BOY (painful)

    DADDY DAYCARE (Ed, Ed, Ed)

ANYTHING WITH CHEVY CHASE (they really, really sucked)

WATERBOY (Wedding singer gets all wet)

MASTER OF DISGUISE (master of nausea)

A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY (sad)

STUART SAVES HIS FAMILY (Al, Al, Al)

    THE LADIES' MAN (pathetic)

    CONEHEADS (very sad)

MR BILL'S REAL LIFE (or something like that)

Any other ones you can recall for this infamous list?

    Victor,

I gotta agree with you, at least for the very few that I actually suffered through, but I was a fan of the original SNL cast. However, I take issue with at least the FIRST Blues Brothers. I thought it was not half bad, two out of 4 stars, at least for me. I was Belushi fan and could tolerate Ackroyd. And it did have Ray in it.

Nice listing; I am duly impressed!

    Cheers,

    Ron

Chris writes: "...Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, and couple more..."

Reply: And not an actor in the whole lot of them. But, then, the Rat Pack was not much either. The Brat Pack had unfulfilled potential.

Did you see the list of movies which have a lower Rotten Tomato rating than DB2? It's like a hall of fame: Gigli, Ecks vs. Sever,....

I think Steve Carell (sp?) and Paul Rudd are part of the new pack too, but they can both be quite funny. Actually, the worst of the pack are the two biggest names: Will Farrell and Ben Stiller. I avoid Farrell and Stiller, so I haven't seen much Vaughn or the Wilsons, but maybe Wedding Crashers will help them get some independence.

Ebert and Roeper gave The 40-Year-Old Virgin two thumbs up, and Deuce got "two thumbs as far down as they can possibly go".

I think Carrell is older and way more talented than the members of this new "comedy rat pack" you've outlined. He's definitely not a part of the frat-boy Old School humor crowd, he tends to work with talented collaborators like those behind The Office and Judd Apatow for this new 40 Year-Old Virgin movie. In fact, Carrell co-wrote it, which says a lot more for his intellect (not to mention his acting ability) than Vaughn or Ferrell.

I can see why you lump Stiller in with some of the other guys, especially since he's Owen Wilson's other sometime partner, but Stiller also seems slightly smarter and more creative if you look at his body of work. He also seems more willing to work with talented directors and screenwriters.

Will Ferrell has never made a good movie. Vince Vaughn has been coasting on the vastly overrated Swingers for years and hasn't really had good reviews until this latest movie.

    That is all.

The first Bigalow made money, thus a sequel. It's simple business. And it was funny, actually, or at least a rather pleasant film with several scenes that I could have easily lived without.

Sandler is often unfairly painted as a one-trick-pony actor, and an unfunny one at that. I dislike several of his films, but I must retort in saying that he's versatile, likeable, and talented enough to be a fairly bankable comedy star.

Finally, there are MANY great films that came out of the SNL universe alongside a large number of awful ones. That the well has gone dry over the last 10 years shouldn't take away from classic films.

Finally (finally): Tommy Boy is a fantastic film!

I am also looking for a song on this movie. The movie, quite horrid but had a decent soundtrack that I cant find anywhere. Does anyone know the name of the song when they were at the man whore awards when they were stripping?
    It sounded sort of euro/techno?

Victor L is right for the most part, except that Blues Brothers (but not Blues Brothers 2000 which is really bad) is the best movie of all time, with great timeless music by superstars...no other movie can even stand in BB's shadow.

oh and Chevy Chase is sometimes funny too.

  • 19 - Victor Lana

    Aug 17, 2005 at 5:58 pm

My problem with BLUES BROTHERS was the story. I LOVED the music, but that was what I expected. The skit worked on SNL because it was just music. They would have done better to do a concert film, bring in Ray and the others, and it would have been awesome. Just my opinion.

I stand by what I said about all the others. Chase is about as funny as a train wreck with kids on board. His only funny time was the first season of SNL. Too bad he left.

PS> Oh, and a GREAT post SNL movie is ANIMAL HOUSE. Now that is hilarious, great story, and Belushi is a STAR! Double Secret Probabtion, shhh!

Granted that Deuce Bigalow is just worthless stupidity. Granted that SNL movies have an overall deservedly bad reputation, but they're not ALL bad.

In particular, the Stuart Smalley movie was excellent. Plus, obviously the first Blues Brothers movie is a pure classic in nearly every way, script, action, and musical performances.

  • 24 - Bob A. Booey

    Aug 18, 2005 at 12:33 pm

I've never seen it, but I did hear that the Stuart Smalley movie got good reviews and was written much differently than any other SNL movie, with much more thought and creativity. Apparently, addicts who've been through 12 step programs see some insight in the film too. Al Franken is a Harvard grad, but I don't know if he wrote it himself?

    That is all.

Mileage varies wildly on Stuart Saves His Family. Some friends and I watched it at the insistence of another friend who absolutely raved about it. We all sat there confused, looking at each other with the "so when does it get funny?" look.
