Not much happening this week — just the most important DVD release in the history of the medium! Well, in terms of timing, anyway.
Bubble
This actually comes out Friday, but that's the whole point. Bubble, the theatrical release, comes out Friday as well. You can also see it on cable. What is this madness? The future, according to director Steven Soderbergh and 2929 co-founders Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner. Soderbergh and 2929 have a deal to do, like, six of these simultaneous release dealies, so sit back (or go out) and see what happens (or just freak out like M. Night).
Flightplan
In 2005 it became okay to be afraid of air travel again. Hollywood manifested this by taking premises from other films and setting them on commerical flights. First Red Eye took Nick of Time into coach class. Now Flightplan moves The Forgotten onto an aerobus. Lending star power and talent (if not actual quality) to the proceedings are Jodie Foster, Sean Bean, and Peter Sarsgaard who, in spite of unmatched potential, still ends up in stuff like this and The Skeleton Key from time to time.
Extras include commentary from director Robert Schwentke, whom you might remember from...um... There are also a couple of making-of featurettes. Enjoy!
The Aristocrats
I can make two guarantees about The Aristocrats. At least one thing in it will make you laugh until you cry, and at least one thing in it will offend you until you're not sure you should keep watching. Probably a lot of both. And that, in a sense, is the objective. Imagine a joke where the whole point is to find the limit of the audience's comfort zone and riff on it for as long as possible. 100 comedians (some of whom you probably haven't seen say so much as "ass" before) contribute to this documentary about a dirty old vaudeville joke. Highlights include Kevin Pollack doing the best Christopher Walken impersonation ever (while doing the joke, of course), a mime routine that's actually hilarious, and a card trick version. To top it all off, Gilbert Gottfried somehow comes off like a national hero. A must, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Loads of extras including director's commentary from Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza, some other favorite jokes from the comedians involved, plus extra footage of Jon Stewart, Sarah Silverman, Lewis Black, and many others.
