Well, folks, The Duke has handed over the reigns of the weekly DVD release column to yours truly and I have humbly accepted the call. There was a ceremony involving burning wax, melted DVDs, and a large PayPal donation to something called “The Duke Digital Entertainment Fund,” but in the end I hope I can serve you nearly as well as he.
To wit…
The Pacifier
Is there anything sadder than to think that but for this we might have had His Vinness’s presence in the Fast and the Furious and XXX sequels? The answer is yes. The fact that there were sequels to those movies. So I guess it’s kind of a wash. In any case, if you purchase this DVD, you get a special feature called “On Set With Mr. Diesel: Action Hero and Nice Guy.” So what are you waiting for?
Diary of a Mad Black Woman
I can’t think of a single person who thought this movie would do as well as it did. I also can’t think of that many people who actually liked it. But enough did that a sequel’s in the works.
One of the features on this DVD is cryptically titled “You Can Do It…It’s Electric.” I can only hope that’s referring to the Electric Slide.
Gunner Palace
You must see this film. You can read my full review here, but suffice it to say this is a document of historical importance. If you want to know what’s going on in Iraq without the filter of the mainstream media, here’s a good opportunity. Be sure to check out some of the rap tracks from the film, included here as a special feature.
The Daily Show: Indecision 2004
If you’re as big a fan of this show as I am, this is a no-brainer. You could collect three disc’s worth of randomly selected Daily Shows and it would be worth buying. If you need convincing, however, know that this particular collection includes the episodes covering the Democratic and Republican conventions, the Election Night coverage, during which you can see Jon Stewart’s faith in humanity slowly crumble, and loads of special reports, including my favorite, Rob Corddry’s 8-Mile inspired coverage of the Democratic debates in Detroit.
Although they stop short of commentary by Jon or the Steve’s, you do get some from Rob, Ed, and Samantha.
Homicide: Life on the Street – Season 7
Is it just me, or are you surprised to learn that Homicide made it to seven seasons? Not for a lack of quality. Quite the opposite. One of the best shows on television, it was frustratingly shoved into crappy time slots and put on hiatus after hiatus until it became questionable that the sum total of episodes would amount to one season, much less seven.
