Tales from the Crypt – The First Season
I remember when this show first aired on HBO and I was just beginning to have an awareness of who different directors were. There was Richard Donner, director of my beloved Lethal Weapon helming an episode. And the guy who did Back to the Future, Robert Zemeckis, in charge of one. And the premiere episode was from 48 Hours director Walter Hill. I was impressed.
Having not seen these stories since they first aired, it’s hard to say if I’d still be as tickled, and to be perfectly honest the only one I remember today is Zemeckis’ And All through the House, with L.A. Law’s Larry Drake playing a demented Santa. But The Cryptkeeper’s wickedly cheesy intros alone are probably still worth the price of admission.
The Nanny – The Complete First Season
Really, is this completely necessary? Isn’t The Beautician and the Beast enough Fran Drescher for DVD-land? In case hearing her voice on the show isn’t enough, she also does audio commentary.
Night Moves/Scarecrow
Two old school Gene Hackman flicks finally make it to the digital screen. Night Moves, from auteur Arthur Penn, follows Hackman-as-detective unraveling a Chinatown-esque noir involving James Woods and a teenage Melanie Griffith. Scarecrow offers us Hackman-as-bum, teaming up with fellow drifter Al Pacino (bet you the movie game just got a lot easier) to roam the countryside. Neither ever really found a broad audience (hence the long trip to DVD) though both probably deserved one.
But wait, there's more...
