Real World: Austin - Week 8

This season of the Real World: Austin took a dramatic turn last week when Danny, one of the house-mates, lost his mother due to a heart attack. At the end of last week's episode, he left the house in Austin to head home to his family in Boston.

This episode picked up with Danny arriving in Boston. MTV cameras followed him to Boston, taping his arrival when he was greeted by his family, at home while he was mourning, and even followed him to the cemetery for the funeral. However, the cameras did shut off during most of this event. At least we can hope they were off, since not much was shown on air.

Most times in the past season when any of the castmates have gone home the cameras have stepped back: they've gone along, but not much footage has been shown. Half of this episode was focused on Danny and his loss: a decision that MTV decided to make, but I'm not sure I understand. I can see them going along, but to show as much of the grieving as they did in this show struck me as odd.

Losing someone is not an easy thing, and losing a parent can be hardest of all. Danny has been through so much this season already between his injury, surgery and recovery. Now he has lost his mother - following him around as he mourned might not have been the best decision.

Danny talked to Melinda several times while in Boston during this episode, including one emotional email in which he stated that he wasn't sure if he would be returning to the house in Austin - that still remains to be seen in future episodes.

While Danny was in Boston, life went on for the house-mates in Austin. Various cast-mates talked about the situation with Danny. Nehemiah was prompted to try to reach his own mother, who we learn is in rehab. After one failed attempt, he did reach her by the end of the episode and touched base with her.

thanks Regina! let's put the Author's Note at the end of these so we don't kill the news and search engine biz

I don't know all the implications, so I'm probably just flapping my gums. But isn't the author's note being at the end sort of undermining its purpose, especially the spoiler warning? By the time you reach it, you'd have read the possible spoiler material. Maybe throw a quick, three or four word spoiler warning at the top at least and leave the rest about the reality of the show, forgive the pun, at the bottom.

Speaking of undermining, I'm doing just that with my little two cents. Nice recap, as always.

Not a problem, Eric. When I originally started including the author's note last week, I placed it at the bottom for that very reason. It was moved to the top by an editor. I'll go back to placing it at the bottom from now on.

And I just read your comment, Jared. I'll think about a short spoiler warning, but mostly the warning I was trying to make with my authors note was for the comments section. Many of the comments have included discussion and speculation for future episodes of the show. I try to stick to the episode of the week with my recaps.

I agree that MTV went way too far in showing Danny and his fam on the day of his mother's funeral. The scope of The Real World should stick to events in and around The House and leave off at the edge of cast members taking off to deal with family emergencies.

If MTV just filmed and filmed and put all that material in, then yes, that's going too far. I'd hope that they conferred with the family on just how much of the proceedings they show. Since this is some six months after the events themselves, roughly, they certainly could have sat down and let Danny and his family in on the process. If they did that, I've no problem with it. Whether they did or not is something I certainly don't know.

I was watching the show and have come to a revelation. Wes is ugly as hell and damn annoying.

I mean how can he even think he is good looking?

I don't like commenting about people's looks, but he speaks so highly of himself and everyone can see what type of person he is. He has no other great quality about him.

And the trait that he seems to value so much, is something that he should not value.

Last night my German Sheppard took a dumb and I had to clean it up,.. the shit I had to clean up was more physically attractive then Wes. That dummy needs someone to tell him the truth. He is so thick headed, that he probably wouldn't believe it.

    What an idiot........
