Since the early 1990s, one show has been on the air every season on the MTV networks. Some might even credit this show with the creation of the reality television genre. That show is the Real World. Each year, and now twice a year, a cast of seven strangers is picked to live in a house for a period of a few months. They work together, play together, and live together all while being video taped for the world to see.
In the past, this has made for good television. People want to watch seven people try to get along with each other. Some fail to do that, and some casts are more volatile than others.
This season of the Real World is set in Austin, and the hour long premiere aired this week. Early on with this season, we can already see that we are set for a bumpy ride with these seven strangers.
This season’s cast is as follows:
Danny is a twenty-two year old from Massachusetts. You can tell right off the bat by his accent where he is from. At the time of the season began, he was twenty-one, and you can already tell this hot boy is going to have the ladies in the house all over him.
Wes, currently twenty, is from Kansas, and you can see his eye is on the ladies. He is a student at Arizona State University, and has aspirations to own his own business once he graduates.
Nehemia seems to be the most calm of the cast from the little bit of I’ve seen. He has experienced more in his young life, only being the age of nineteen, and that life experience shows in his demeanor.
Rachel is a twenty year old woman and on first appearance you wouldn’t know it, but she is also a veteran of the Iraq war. She served four years in the army as a combat nurse, and just from this one episode you can see her care shine through. You can also see she might be a bit on the wild side.
Melinda, is a twenty one year old from Wisconsin, and you can see right off the bat this girl is a wild child, and all the guys have their eyes on her assets. She has no problem walking around the house in the smallest pair of pants imaginable, and this brings her attention from the males in the house. She’s also the open one. Although not labeling herself as bisexual, she doesn’t mind kissing the ladies. Even sharing a kiss with Rachel in the hot tub the first night.

I'm a long time Real World fan and caught this episode the other night. I was a bit disappointed, not so much in the show itself, as with the choice of participants. It seems that all they want to do is drink and all they want to talk about is sex. While those are fun things, I'll grant you that, I felt like I was watching one long frat party unfold.
I'll keep watching the show because ...well, because I always do (lol), but I hope it improves from it's current shallowness and offers more than just a chance to watch college kids get drunk and stupid.
