This could be really great, or really bad since Spheeris has made some really good rock movies (Decline of Western Civilization) and mostly crap (Beverly Hillbillies) however, her recent work has been more about rock instead of paying bills.
Though she did do "Wayne's World", so it is probably "party on" (well, at least up until the dying of a drug overdose part).

Renee Zellwegger is in the running. I prefer Zellwegger.

Wasn't Joan Osbourne involved in this at one point? Certainly she is closer in terms of music to Janis Joplin than Pink, but is too old to actually do the acting.

Osbourne is a more obvious choice musically than Pink, but as you note, Pink is the right age. And Pink is closer to Janis musically than you might think ... as I noted in my blog post at the time, when I saw Pink in concert a couple of years ago, she did a Janis Joplin medley and it seemed quite appropriate, if odd.

Seems like Pink would more have the proper internal angst to play Janis than Joan Osbourne.

you obviouosly haven't seen the off broadway musical "Love, Janis"
There is a singer in it named Katrina Chester that is unbelievable. I respect both Joan and Pink but have to say I can't imagine someone playing the part better than Katrina
